A temple day from Dharamshala
Jwalamukhi sits at the centre of the Kangra temple circuit. A comfortable plan is Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra first thing, Jwalamukhi before the midday closure, lunch in town, and Chamunda Devi on the way back in the afternoon. That's three of the region's best-known temples in one unhurried day, back in Dharamshala by evening.
If you'd rather keep it short, Jwalamukhi alone is a half day: out after breakfast, back for a late lunch.
- 9:00 am: leave Dharamshala; stop at Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra.
- 11:00 am: darshan at Jwalamukhi.
- 1:00 pm: lunch in Jwalamukhi town.
- 3:30 pm: Chamunda Devi on the way back.
- 5:30 pm: back in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj.
Jwalamukhi timings
The temple administration lists summer hours of about 6 am to 10 pm and winter hours of about 7 am to 9:30 pm, with a short closure around midday, and aarti morning and evening. Festival days can change the hours, so we confirm them for your date.
About the Jwalamukhi temple
Jwalamukhi is unusual among Himachal's great temples because there's no idol. According to tradition it's one of the Shakti Peeths, and the goddess is worshipped as the small, steady flames that burn from openings in the rock inside the sanctum. The temple sits on a hillside above the town, reached by a short walk through a lane of shops selling prasad, chunni and coconuts.
The queue moves past the flames rather than an image, and the priests guide pilgrims through quickly on busy days. Evening aarti, when the temple is lit and the crowd is mostly local families, is a good time if you're staying nearby.
Adding Chamunda Devi and Brajeshwari Devi
Chamunda Devi, on the banks of the Baner river, is about 15–17 km from Dharamshala, so it fits easily on the way back. Published opening hours vary between sources, roughly 5–6 am to 8–9 pm, so we confirm on the day. Brajeshwari Devi stands in the old part of Kangra town, on the road between Dharamshala and Jwalamukhi, and has a short midday break of its own.
With all three, plan a full day: Brajeshwari early, Jwalamukhi before midday, lunch, then Chamunda Devi in the afternoon on the way home.
