Overview
Amritsar to Jwalamukhi is roughly 185–195 km, usually 4½ to 5½ hours by taxi across the Punjab plains and up through Una district, passing close to Chintpurni about 35 km before Jwalamukhi. Jwalamukhi's temple, at about 610 m in Kangra district, is one of Himachal's most important Shakti Peeths: instead of an idol, pilgrims worship natural flames burning from the rock inside the sanctum. From Amritsar, it combines naturally with the Golden Temple and with Chintpurni on the same day. We pick you up from your Amritsar hotel, the airport or the station, and the driver waits while you have darshan.

Jwalamukhi timings and darshan
The Kangra temples administration lists summer hours of about 6 am to 10 pm and winter hours of about 7 am to 9:30 pm, with a short midday closure and morning and evening aarti. The queue files past the flames in the sanctum, guided by the priests, and moves quickly on most weekdays. Festival hours differ, so we confirm them for your date.
Chintpurni and Jwalamukhi in one day
Most pilgrims from Amritsar visit both temples on the same day. Chintpurni comes first, about 3½ to 4½ hours from Amritsar, with a walk of about 1.5 km from the bus stand to the temple. Jwalamukhi is about an hour further on. With an early start, you can have darshan at both and reach Jwalamukhi or Kangra for the night, or drive back to Amritsar late in the evening.
- Amritsar to Chintpurni: about 3½–4½ hours.
- Chintpurni to Jwalamukhi: about an hour.
- Jwalamukhi to Dharamshala: about 1¼–1½ hours.
Continuing to Kangra and Dharamshala
From Jwalamukhi, the Kangra temples are close: Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town is about an hour away, and Chamunda Devi a little further, near Dharamshala. Many families make it a three-day Devi darshan from Amritsar, ending in McLeod Ganj or at Kangra airport for a flight home. Keep the same car and driver throughout and you won't need to arrange transport at each temple.
Golden Temple and the Devi temples
Amritsar is a good starting point for the Himachal Devi temples, especially for overseas pilgrims and NRI families. Fly into Amritsar, spend a morning at the Golden Temple, then drive into the hills the next day. The route back can go through Pathankot, so the whole trip makes a loop without retracing the same road.
Which way from Amritsar?
From Amritsar there are two sensible ways into Una and Kangra districts. The southern route runs through Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur and climbs to Chintpurni, which is the natural choice when you want both temples. The northern route runs up the NH54 to Pathankot and then east through Nurpur and Kangra, which suits travellers heading straight to Jwalamukhi from the Kangra side or continuing on to Dharamshala afterwards. The distances are close, so the driver picks the better road on the day.
On the return, many families take the other route back, so the trip becomes a loop through Pathankot and doesn't repeat the same stretch of highway twice. If you have a train from Pathankot or a flight from Amritsar, tell us the time and we'll plan the order of temples around it.
