Overview

Amritsar to McLeod Ganj is roughly 205–215 km, usually 5 to 6 hours by taxi: north across the Punjab plains to Pathankot, then into the Kangra hills via Nurpur and Shahpur, and finally up from lower Dharamshala to the upper town. It's one of the most popular combinations in north India, pairing the Golden Temple with the Dalai Lama's home in exile in a single trip. Amritsar's international airport and frequent trains make it a convenient arrival point for overseas visitors. We pick you up from your hotel, the airport or the station and drop you at your McLeod Ganj hotel or as near your guesthouse as the lanes allow.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Amritsar by 8–9 am to reach McLeod Ganj by mid-afternoon.
  • 2The plains stretch to Pathankot is quick; the hill road after Nurpur takes longer than its distance suggests.
  • 3Seeing the Golden Temple at dawn first? A 7 am darshan and a 9 am departure works well.
  • 4If you're going to the Wagah–Attari border ceremony, do it the day before; it runs in the late afternoon.
  • 5Tell us about motion sickness; the last hour is winding hill road.

Golden Temple to McLeod Ganj: a classic pairing

Many international travellers fly into Amritsar, spend a day at the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Wagah border, then drive to McLeod Ganj for monasteries, cafés and walks in the Dhauladhar foothills. The drive is long enough to feel the change from Punjab's plains to the mountains, but short enough to arrive in daylight.

If you're flying in, we can meet you at Amritsar airport and drive straight up. With an afternoon arrival, an overnight in Amritsar first is better, so you aren't on the hill road after dark.

Arriving in McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes running off it, and parts of Jogiwara Road and Temple Road are closed to through traffic at busy times. Cars can reach most hotels on the main roads, but some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a vehicle can stop. Share your guesthouse name when you book and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

  • Share the exact guesthouse name and a phone number.
  • Keep a small day bag handy if the last bit is on foot.
  • Late-afternoon arrivals meet the most traffic on the upper road.

Going on from McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj sits at the western end of the Kangra valley, so it's a natural first stop on a longer Himachal trip. From here, Palampur's tea gardens and Bir's paragliding site are two to three hours east, Dalhousie and Khajjiar about four to five hours north-west, and Manali a long day's drive. We can keep the same car for a multi-day itinerary, or book single transfers as you go.

Travelling the other way, or one way

Plenty of travellers do this route in reverse, finishing a Himachal trip in McLeod Ganj and flying home from Amritsar's international airport. Leave McLeod Ganj after breakfast and you're in Amritsar by mid-afternoon, with time for the evening at the Golden Temple. For an international flight, allow a generous buffer: hill traffic out of Dharamshala and checkpoints near Pathankot can add an hour without warning.

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Bir Billing Paragliding Trip Guide: Season, Getting There and Planning

Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: A Guide for International Visitors

McLeod Ganj, above Dharamshala, is home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama, which gives it a character unlike anywhere else in India: monasteries, prayer flags, Tibetan cafés and the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar range just behind. It draws visitors from all over the world. Here's how to make the most of it, including how to attend a public teaching.

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.
