Overview

Dharamshala to Amritsar is roughly 195–210 km, usually 5 to 6 hours by taxi: west out of the Kangra valley through Gaggal, Shahpur and Nurpur to Pathankot, then across the Punjab plains via Gurdaspur and Batala to Amritsar. It's a popular way to end a Himachal trip with an evening at the Golden Temple, or to reach Amritsar's international airport for a flight home. The first two hours are on winding hill roads; after Pathankot, the highway is flat and quick. We pick you up from your hotel in Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot, and drop you at your Amritsar hotel, the airport or the station.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Dharamshala by 9 am to reach Amritsar by mid-afternoon.
  • 2Starting from McLeod Ganj adds about 30 minutes.
  • 3For an international flight, leave a buffer of four hours or more; checkpoints and traffic near Pathankot can add time.
  • 4If you'd like the Wagah–Attari border ceremony, aim to reach Amritsar by early afternoon; it runs in the late afternoon.
  • 5Winter fog on the Punjab plains (December–January) can slow the evening stretch.

Ending your trip at the Golden Temple

Amritsar makes a memorable last stop after the hills. Arrive by mid-afternoon, check in near the Golden Temple, and visit in the evening, when the temple is lit and the Palki Sahib ceremony takes place. With an early start from Dharamshala, you can also see the Wagah–Attari border ceremony in the late afternoon; the driver can take you straight there before dropping you at your hotel.

  • Golden Temple in the evening
  • Wagah–Attari border ceremony
  • Jallianwala Bagh next morning

Catching a flight from Amritsar

Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport has direct international flights and frequent domestic ones. For a flight the same day, leave Dharamshala early and allow at least four hours of buffer, since the hill section is unpredictable. For a morning flight, stay the night in Amritsar instead of driving through the night.

Coming from McLeod Ganj or Dalhousie

We pick up from McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot as well as Dharamshala; it adds about 30 minutes. If you're finishing your trip in Dalhousie instead, the drive to Amritsar is about 200 km and 4½–5½ hours via Pathankot. Tell us where you'll be on the last morning and we'll set the pickup time.

Where in Amritsar we drop you

We drop at hotels around the Golden Temple, on Lawrence Road and in Ranjit Avenue, at Amritsar railway station, and at the airport. The lanes right around the Golden Temple are closed to cars; the driver drops you at the nearest point, and hotels there usually send someone to help with luggage.

Luggage, shopping and the last morning

Many travellers leave Dharamshala with more than they arrived with: Tibetan carpets, thangkas, tea from Palampur and shawls. If you've bought anything bulky, tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with enough boot space, usually an SUV or Innova. Fragile items travel best on the back seat rather than in the boot on the winding first section.

On the last morning, settle your hotel bill the night before, have an early breakfast, and keep water and snacks handy. The driver will suggest a clean lunch stop around Pathankot. If you're staying in Bhagsu or Dharamkot, where some guesthouses are a short walk from the road, ask the guesthouse for help carrying bags to the pickup point.

Weather & road conditions

October–March: cool, clear days in Amritsar.
April–June: hot in Amritsar; leave early to arrive before the afternoon heat.
July–August: heavy rain in the Kangra hills; allow extra time.

Pickup options

  • • Dharamshala hotels (Kotwali Bazaar, Cantt, stadium area)
  • • McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot
  • • Kangra airport (Gaggal)

Delhi's airport is big and busy, and the first hour after a long-haul flight can feel overwhelming. The good news: everything you need, from cash and a SIM card to a safe ride, is inside the arrivals hall. This is the order we suggest to our own guests, plus how to decide whether to head for the hills the same day.

Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: A Guide for International Visitors

McLeod Ganj, above Dharamshala, is home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama, which gives it a character unlike anywhere else in India: monasteries, prayer flags, Tibetan cafés and the snow peaks of the Dhauladhar range just behind. It draws visitors from all over the world. Here's how to make the most of it, including how to attend a public teaching.

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.
