Overview

Amritsar to Shimla is about 310–350 km and 7–8.5 hours. It's a popular way to pair the Golden Temple with the hills, especially for travellers flying into Amritsar from abroad or from the Gulf. The first half crosses flat Punjab farmland; the climb starts at either Kalka or Kiratpur, depending on traffic, and gains about 2,000 m to Shimla's ridge. If you land in the morning, there's time for a Golden Temple visit first, but then we'd recommend a night in Amritsar and an early start, so the hill section happens in daylight.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Kalka–Shimla Toy Train: How to Ride It and Combine It with a Taxi

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain line climbing about 96 km from Kalka, at the foot of the hills, to Shimla. It's part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage site, and for many visitors the slow ride through tunnels, bridges and pine forest is a highlight of the trip. It's also slow, at around five hours, so it pays to plan how you'll reach Kalka and what happens with your luggage. Here's how to do it.

Chandigarh to Shimla Taxi Cost: What You Should Really Pay

Chandigarh to Shimla is only about 115 km, yet one-way taxi quotes vary from under ₹2,000 to nearly ₹6,000, sometimes from the same company. The difference is almost never the car: it's how the fare is built and what's left out. Here's how to read a quote, and what an all-inclusive price should look like.
