Overview
Shimla to Kalpa is roughly 220–230 km, usually 7½ to 8½ hours by taxi: over Narkanda, along the Sutlej through Rampur and Karcham to Reckong Peo, Kinnaur's district headquarters, then about 10–13 km up to Kalpa at roughly 2,960 m. Kalpa is famous for one thing above all: the view across the valley to the Kinner Kailash range, which turns gold and pink at sunrise. It's also the usual overnight before Spiti, and foreign visitors can arrange their Protected Area Permit in Reckong Peo. We pick you up from your Shimla hotel's nearest vehicle point and drop you at your Kalpa hotel.

Why Kalpa
Kalpa sits on a shelf of orchards above Reckong Peo, directly facing the Kinner Kailash range across the Sutlej valley. The Kinner Kailash peak, at about 6,050 m, is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists, and at sunrise the whole range catches the light. Kalpa's old wooden temples and monastery, its apple orchards and the walk to Roghi village, past the cliffside viewpoint known as Suicide Point, fill a quiet day.

Kalpa on the way to Spiti
For travellers going on to Spiti through Kinnaur, Kalpa is the natural first overnight. From here, Kaza is about 208 km, a long day through Pooh, Khab, Nako and Tabo, or two easier days with a night in Nako or Tabo. Breaking the climb this way helps with the altitude, since Kaza is at about 3,650 m.
Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for the stretch beyond Jangi. Travellers report that it's usually issued at the SDM office in Reckong Peo on working days, so arriving in Kalpa a day before you set off for Spiti is sensible. Indian citizens don't need it.
Breaking the drive at Sarahan
If you'd rather not do eight hours in one day, stop a night at Sarahan, about 17 km above Jeori. Its Bhimakali temple, built in the Kinnauri wood-and-stone style, is one of the finest in Himachal, and the village looks across to Srikhand Mahadev. The next day, Kalpa is about three to four hours on.
Combining Kalpa with Sangla and Chitkul
Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul make a compact Kinnaur loop: Sangla and Chitkul up the Baspa valley, Kalpa up the main Sutlej valley, about 3–3½ hours apart. Most visitors do Sangla and Chitkul first, then Kalpa, then return to Shimla or continue to Spiti. With the same car throughout, the driver handles every leg.
Sunrise in Kalpa
The Kinner Kailash range faces Kalpa from across the Sutlej, so it catches the first light of the day. On a clear morning, the peaks turn pink and then gold within a few minutes of sunrise. Many hotels have terraces facing the range; ask for a room with the view when you book. Clouds often build by midday, so mornings are best, especially in autumn and spring.
