Overview

Shimla to Chitkul is roughly 240–250 km, usually 8 to 9½ hours by taxi: over Narkanda, along the Sutlej through Rampur to Karcham, then up the Baspa valley through Sangla and Rakchham to Chitkul at about 3,450 m. Chitkul is the last village on the road towards the Tibet frontier, often called India's last village, with wooden houses, a river valley and snow peaks on every side. In one day, it's a long and tiring drive, and Chitkul's altitude is high enough to cause headaches, so most travellers stop a night in Sangla first. We pick you up from your Shimla hotel's nearest vehicle point and drop you at your Chitkul guesthouse.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1If you're driving straight through, leave Shimla by 6 am to reach Chitkul before dark.
  • 2We recommend a night in Sangla, about an hour below Chitkul, to break the drive and adjust to the altitude.
  • 3The road beyond Sangla is narrow and partly unpaved; an SUV is the better choice.
  • 4After snowfall, from about November to April, the Sangla–Chitkul road can close for days.
  • 5No permit is needed for Chitkul, for Indian or foreign visitors.

What Chitkul is like

Chitkul sits at the head of the road up the Baspa valley, at about 3,450 m. Wooden and stone houses cluster around the temple of Mathi Devi, the local goddess, with potato and buckwheat fields running down to the river. Beyond the village, the valley continues towards the frontier, but the road ends here. The appeal is the setting: a wide glacial valley, the Baspa running fast and clear, and snow peaks in every direction.

There isn't much to 'do', and that's the point. Walk along the river, sit by the water, and watch the light change on the peaks in the evening.

  • Riverside walks along the Baspa
  • Mathi Devi temple
  • Rakchham meadows
  • Sunset on the peaks

Break the journey in Sangla

Driving from Shimla to Chitkul in one go means more than eight hours on the road and a climb of over 1,200 m above Shimla in a day. A night in Sangla, at about 2,700 m, splits the trip into a long first day and a short second morning, and gives your body time to adjust. It also lets you see Kamru fort and Sangla's orchards, which you'd otherwise drive straight past.

Staying in Chitkul

Chitkul has guesthouses and small hotels, mostly simple, with hot water by bucket in some. Electricity and mobile signal can be patchy, so carry a power bank and download offline maps. Nights are cold even in summer; pack warm layers. Rakchham, a few kilometres down the valley, has riverside camps and homestays if Chitkul is full.

Going on from Chitkul

From Chitkul, the road goes back down to Karcham. Most travellers then either return to Shimla or continue up the Sutlej to Kalpa, about 3–3½ hours from Chitkul, for the Kinner Kailash view. Kalpa is also the usual stop before Spiti. We can keep the car for the whole Kinnaur loop or price each leg separately.
