Overview

Rishikesh to Shimla is roughly 250–280 km, usually 7 to 8 hours by taxi: through Dehradun to Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna, into Himachal via Nahan, then up through Solan to Shimla at about 2,200 m. An alternative runs down to the plains and up the Kalka–Shimla highway via Chandigarh. It's a natural next step for travellers heading from Rishikesh's ashrams into the Himalaya, and the start of the classic Shimla–Manali circuit. There's no direct train, and buses mean a change, so a taxi is the simplest way. We pick you up from your Rishikesh ashram or hotel and drop you at your Shimla hotel's nearest vehicle point.

Two routes into Shimla

The direct route stays in the hills: Dehradun, Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna, the old town of Nahan, and then up through Solan to Shimla. It's shorter but winding. The other route drops to the plains and joins the Chandigarh–Shimla four-lane at Zirakpur or Pinjore, a little longer but quicker in parts. Both take about seven to eight hours.

Shimla, then Manali

For many travellers, Shimla is the start of the classic loop: two nights in Shimla, then the drive to Manali, about seven to nine hours, and back down to Chandigarh or Delhi. Keeping one car and driver for the whole loop means no rebooking between towns and a driver who handles local sightseeing too.

  • Shimla: the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhu temple
  • Kufri and Chail day trips
  • Onward to Manali or Kasol

Riding the toy train

The Kalka–Shimla railway, a UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line, is a highlight for many visitors. If you'd like to ride it, we can drive you from Rishikesh to Kalka for the train, and take your luggage on to your Shimla hotel. Book train tickets well ahead in peak season.

Travelling from abroad

If you're arriving from abroad, a few things make the trip easier: an Indian SIM card or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver, some cash in rupees for tea stops and tips, and a downloaded offline map. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English; for anything complicated, message us on WhatsApp and we'll translate.

What the drive is like

On the hill route, the road leaves Rishikesh through Dehradun and the Doon valley, crosses into Himachal at Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna, and climbs through the Shivalik hills to Nahan, an old princely town with a lake and temples. From there, it winds through the Sirmaur hills to Kumarhatti and Solan, where it joins the main highway for the last hour to Shimla.

It's a pleasant, green drive with fewer trucks than the main Chandigarh highway, but slower and more winding. Anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in front and keep breakfast light. Paonta Sahib's gurudwara on the river makes a good first stop, about two hours from Rishikesh.

  • Paonta Sahib gurudwara
  • Nahan's old town
  • Solan, about an hour before Shimla

Useful guides for this trip

Rishikesh to McLeod Ganj, Manali, Kasol and Shimla: How to Get There

Rishikesh is where many travellers start in north India, and the Himachal hills, McLeod Ganj, Manali, Kasol and Shimla, are where most of them head next. The catch is that there are few direct connections: no railway into the Himachal hills from Rishikesh, and buses that usually mean a change and a night on the road. This guide compares the options for each destination, with realistic drive times.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Kalka–Shimla Toy Train: How to Ride It and Combine It with a Taxi

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a narrow-gauge mountain line climbing about 96 km from Kalka, at the foot of the hills, to Shimla. It's part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage site, and for many visitors the slow ride through tunnels, bridges and pine forest is a highlight of the trip. It's also slow, at around five hours, so it pays to plan how you'll reach Kalka and what happens with your luggage. Here's how to do it.

Altitude Sickness in Spiti, Ladakh and Lahaul: A Practical Guide

Spiti, Lahaul and Ladakh are some of the most spectacular places you can reach by road in India, and some of the highest. Kaza is at about 3,650 m, Leh at about 3,500 m, Chandratal at about 4,300 m, and the passes on the way are higher still. Altitude sickness is common on these trips, and the way you plan the drive makes a big difference. This guide covers the practical side; it isn't medical advice, so talk to a doctor before you travel, especially if you have health conditions.
