Overview
Rishikesh to McLeod Ganj is roughly 450–480 km, usually 10½ to 12 hours by taxi: west across the plains of Haryana and Punjab to Ropar and Una, into the Kangra valley, and up through lower Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj at about 2,000 m. It's one of the most common journeys for travellers from abroad, linking India's yoga capital with the Dalai Lama's home in exile, but there's no direct bus or train: the public options mean changes and overnight buses. A private taxi takes you door to door in one long day. We pick you up from your Rishikesh ashram or hotel and drop you at your McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot stay.

Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave Rishikesh by 5–6 am to reach McLeod Ganj by early evening.
- 2Most of the drive is on plains highways; the last two to three hours, after Una, are hill roads.
- 3Laxman Jhula and Tapovan lanes are narrow; the driver may meet you at the nearest road point.
- 4In winter (December–January), fog on the plains can slow the morning; we may start a little later for safety.
- 5Breaking the trip in Chandigarh or Anandpur Sahib makes it two easier days.

Why travellers take a taxi for this trip
Rishikesh and McLeod Ganj are both on most yoga and spiritual travellers' lists, but they aren't directly connected by public transport. The usual alternatives are a bus or train to Dehradun, Haridwar or Chandigarh and then an overnight bus to Dharamshala, with a change and a long night. A taxi does it in one day, from your ashram door to your guesthouse, which is why many travellers, especially couples and small groups sharing the cost, choose it.
Arriving in McLeod Ganj
McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes. Hotels on the main roads are usually door to door; some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a car can stop. Share your guesthouse name and a phone number when you book, and the driver will plan the nearest drop.
Splitting the drive
Ten to twelve hours is a long day. Two good overnight stops break it up: Chandigarh, about five hours from Rishikesh, a modern planned city with plenty of hotels; or Anandpur Sahib, about seven hours, a Sikh pilgrimage town with the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum. With the same car for both days, you pay for the extra day, not two separate trips.
- Rishikesh to Chandigarh: about 5 hours
- Chandigarh to McLeod Ganj: about 5½–7 hours
- Or straight through in one long day
Travelling from abroad
If you're arriving from abroad, a few things make the trip easier: an Indian SIM card or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver, some cash in rupees for tea stops and tips, and a downloaded offline map. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English; for anything complicated, message us on WhatsApp and we'll translate.
