Overview
Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj is only about 7–10 km by road, usually 25 to 40 minutes by taxi, but it's a climb of several hundred metres from the lower town to upper Dharamshala at about 2,000 m. Most visitors arrive in lower Dharamshala by bus, or from Kangra airport, and need a car for the last stretch with luggage. McLeod Ganj is where the Dalai Lama's temple complex, most of the guesthouses, cafés and the Triund trailhead are. We pick you up anywhere in Dharamshala and drop you as close to your guesthouse as the narrow lanes allow.

Driving tips for this route
- 1The upper roads are narrow and partly one-way; late afternoon is the busiest time.
- 2Many guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are above the last point a car can reach; tell us the property name in advance.
- 3With heavy bags, an SUV handles the steep climb more comfortably than a small car.
- 4Parking in McLeod Ganj is very limited; the driver drops you and leaves rather than waiting in the square.
- 5Going on to Bhagsu or Dharamkot? Book it as one trip so you don't change cars in the square.

Where to get dropped in McLeod Ganj
McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square where several lanes meet: Temple Road towards the Dalai Lama's temple complex, Jogiwara Road, and the roads to Bhagsu and Dharamkot. Cars can reach most hotels on the main roads, but several guesthouses are up stepped lanes. If you send us the exact property, the driver will take the best route and stop at the closest point.
For Dharamkot and upper Bhagsu, a taxi can usually go further than the square, but the very last stretch to some homestays is on foot. If anyone in your group can't manage steps, tell us and we'll suggest a hotel with road access.
- Temple Road: for the Tsuglagkhang complex and nearby hotels.
- Bhagsu road: for Bhagsunag temple and the waterfall walk.
- Dharamkot road: for the quieter village and one start of the Triund trail.
Things to do once you're up
Most people spend their first afternoon walking: the kora path around the Tsuglagkhang complex, the cafés and bookshops of Jogiwara Road, and the short walk to Bhagsunag temple and the waterfall. With a full day, Triund is the classic walk, about 9 km up from town to a ridge at around 2,850 m. Many visitors also take a day trip to Bir for paragliding or to Palampur's tea gardens; we can arrange those from your McLeod Ganj hotel.
Arriving by bus, train or plane
Most long-distance buses from Delhi and Chandigarh stop at the lower Dharamshala bus stand, and some continue to McLeod Ganj. If yours ends in the lower town, a taxi up with your bags is far easier than a local bus. Flying in, Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 18–20 km from McLeod Ganj; we can take you straight there without stopping in the lower town.
Train travellers usually come via Pathankot, about 85 km from Dharamshala and a little more to McLeod Ganj. Tell us your arrival time and we'll meet you at the station or bus stand.
