McLeod Ganj
Most first-time visitors stay in McLeod Ganj, within walking distance of the Dalai Lama temple, the Tibetan market and dozens of cafés. Hotels range from basic guesthouses to comfortable mid-range properties with mountain views. The town's two main roads are narrow and one-way, and traffic jams are common in season, so ask whether your hotel can be reached by car and where the driver can stop.
Bhagsu and Dharamkot
Bhagsu, about 2 km east of McLeod Ganj, sits around the temple and waterfall and is full of guesthouses and cafés; it's lively and good value. Dharamkot, above Bhagsu, is quieter, with yoga and meditation centres, long-stay guesthouses and forest trails, and it's the closest base for the Triund trek. Both involve steep walking, and cars can't reach every guesthouse, so travel light.
Naddi
Naddi, about 3 km from McLeod Ganj, has some of the best views of the Dhauladhar, especially at sunrise and sunset, and a handful of resorts and hotels. It suits couples and families who want calm and are happy to take a taxi into town.
Lower Dharamshala and the valley
Lower Dharamshala is the practical choice for cricket fans (the HPCA stadium is here), for travellers with early buses or flights, and for families who want easy car access. Resorts around Sidhbari and the valley floor offer space and gardens and suit those planning Kangra valley trips. The Skyway ropeway now makes getting up to McLeod Ganj quick.
What to check before booking

- Stairs: many guesthouses are up long flights of steps.
- Heating and hot water in winter, and drying space in the monsoon.
- Views: rooms facing the Dhauladhar or the valley are worth asking for.
- Match days: hotels near the stadium fill up and raise prices.
