Dharamshala Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget for 3 to 4 Days

Dharamshala is one of the better-value hill destinations in Himachal, with plenty of guesthouses, cheap Tibetan food and free monasteries. The biggest costs are getting there and, in peak season, hotels. This guide breaks down each part of the budget and gives sample totals. Prices change by season, so treat every figure as indicative and check current rates. It's part of our Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj guide.

Getting there

  • Overnight bus from Delhi: the cheapest option; HRTC and private Volvo fares vary by season and bus type.
  • Flights to Gaggal: fast but variable in price, and limited in number.
  • Train to Pathankot, then a taxi: inexpensive by rail, plus the 85 km drive.
  • Private taxi from Delhi (about 475 km), Chandigarh (about 240 km) or Amritsar (about 200 km): priced per vehicle, so cheaper per head for families and groups. Our route pages show all-inclusive fares.

Where you stay

Rates rise in May to June, October and holiday weeks, and when the stadium hosts a big match. Rough ranges per room per night in normal season:

TypeIndicative price per night
Hostel bed or very basic guesthouseAbout ₹400–1,000
Budget hotel or homestayAbout ₹1,000–2,500
Mid-range hotelAbout ₹3,000–6,000
Upscale hotel or resortAbout ₹8,000 and above

Sightseeing and fees

Many of the best things in McLeod Ganj are free: the Dalai Lama temple complex, the kora walk, Bhagsu and Naddi. Small fees apply for the Tibet Museum and, on non-match days, the HPCA stadium (published figures vary, from free to about ₹30). Kangra fort, Norbulingka and the Skyway ropeway are ticketed; check current rates on the day.

A taxi for the Kangra valley is a full day; Palampur and Bir are each a full day too. Our Dharamshala taxi service page and the route pages list fares. Triund is free to walk, but camping and guides cost extra.

Food and extras

  • Food: Tibetan cafés and dhabas are very affordable; roughly ₹400–1,200 per person per day.
  • Café culture in McLeod Ganj and Dharamkot costs more, but is still moderate.
  • Triund camping or a guided trek: priced by operator.
  • Paragliding at Bir: priced by flight length.
  • Shopping: Tibetan crafts, shawls and Kangra tea.

Sample budgets

Rough totals for illustration, excluding shopping, in normal season. A budget couple for 4 days by Volvo from Delhi, staying in a guesthouse and eating in Tibetan cafés, might spend roughly ₹15,000–22,000 in total. A family of four for 4 days with a private taxi from Delhi, a mid-range hotel and a Kangra valley day might spend roughly ₹55,000–90,000.

For an exact transport figure, send us your dates and group size. Our packages show a per-person price with hotels and car included.

Ways to save

  • Travel outside May–June and holiday weeks.
  • Share one car as a group: taxis are priced per vehicle.
  • Stay in Dharamkot or Bhagsu guesthouses for value.
  • Use the Skyway or local buses between the two towns.
  • Combine Kangra fort, Norbulingka and Chamunda in one valley day.

Dharamshala Weather by Month and the Best Time to Visit

Dharamshala's weather is shaped by the Dhauladhar range rising straight behind it. The mountains catch the monsoon, making it one of the wettest places in India, and they hold snow for much of the year. Lower Dharamshala is mild; McLeod Ganj, about 600 m higher, is noticeably cooler. This guide gives the long-term averages from the India Meteorological Department and the best months for each kind of trip. It's part of our Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj guide.

Places to Visit in Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: 20 Sights

Dharamshala is really two towns stacked on one mountainside under the Dhauladhar range: lower Dharamshala, the busy administrative town at about 1,400 m, and McLeod Ganj above it at about 2,080 m, home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community in exile. Between and around them are monasteries, waterfalls, forest walks, a famously scenic cricket ground and, down in the Kangra valley, forts, temples and tea gardens. This list covers the places most worth your time. It's part of our Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj guide.
