Palampur Guide: Tea Gardens, Baijnath and the Dhauladhar

Palampur is a green, gentle town in the Kangra valley, surrounded by tea gardens and pine forest, with the Dhauladhar rising sharply behind it. It's the centre of Kangra tea, a calmer alternative to McLeod Ganj, and the gateway to the Baijnath temple and Bir Billing. It works as a day trip from Dharamshala or a peaceful base of its own. It's part of our Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj guide.

The tea gardens

Tea has been grown around Palampur since the 19th century, when the British planted it in the Kangra valley. Kangra tea, a light green and black tea, is a registered Geographical Indication. Walks through the estates, with the snow peaks behind the bushes, are the highlight of a visit. Some estates and the cooperative tea factory welcome visitors; ask locally which are open, and buy tea direct.

Places to visit in and around Palampur

  • Tea estates: walks among the bushes, and tea tasting where offered.
  • Neugal khad and Saurabh Van Vihar: a stream and a forest park on the edge of town with Dhauladhar views.
  • Andretta: an artists' village a few kilometres away, known for pottery and its connection with the painter Sobha Singh and the writer Norah Richards.
  • Baijnath temple: a carved stone Shiva temple about 16 km east, dated to 1204.
  • Bir Billing: the paragliding centre, a little further east.
  • The Kangra Valley Railway: a slow, scenic narrow-gauge ride.

Baijnath temple

The Baijnath temple is dedicated to Shiva as Vaidyanath, the lord of physicians. Built in the Nagara style and dated by its inscriptions to 1204, it's richly carved and still in active worship. It's especially busy at Shivratri. Combine it with Palampur in a day, or on the way to Bir.

Planning a Palampur day

From Dharamshala, a full day can cover the tea gardens, Neugal khad, Andretta and Baijnath. Add Bir for paragliding views if you leave early. If you'd like a quieter stay, Palampur has heritage homes and tea-estate bungalows, and Kangra airport is about an hour away. Our Dharamshala to Palampur and Kangra airport to Palampur pages show fares.

When to go

March to June and September to November are best. Tea is plucked from spring to autumn, with the first flush in spring. The monsoon is very wet, as across the Kangra valley, and winters are cool and clear, with fresh snow on the Dhauladhar.

Staying in Palampur

Palampur has heritage homestays, tea-estate bungalows and a few hotels, and makes a calm base for exploring the eastern Kangra valley. From here, Bir Billing is about an hour away, Baijnath about half an hour, and Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj about an hour and a quarter. It's a good choice for families and older travellers who prefer flat walks and quiet evenings.
