By air: Kangra airport at Gaggal

Kangra airport (code DHM), at Gaggal, is about 15 km from Dharamshala and 18 km from McLeod Ganj. It has direct flights from Delhi and a few other cities, though schedules change and weather can cause delays. When flights suit your dates, it's by far the quickest way in. Our Kangra airport arrival guide explains what to expect, and we meet every flight.

Alternatives are Amritsar (about 200 km, with more flights, including international ones) and Chandigarh (about 240 km).

By road: taxi or self-drive

From Delhi, the usual route runs north through Ambala and Ludhiana or via Chandigarh and Una into the Kangra valley; drivers choose the best road for the day's traffic. From Amritsar the drive goes through Pathankot. A private taxi is the easiest choice for families, with door-to-door service all the way up to McLeod Ganj, where the narrow lanes and one-way loops confuse visiting drivers.

Our Delhi to Dharamshala, Chandigarh to Dharamshala and Amritsar to Dharamshala pages show fares by vehicle.

By bus: HRTC and private Volvos

Overnight buses run from Delhi, including HRTC Volvos and many private services, taking about 10 to 12 hours. Some go all the way to McLeod Ganj; others stop at the Dharamshala bus stand, from where local taxis and buses run up the hill. HRTC also runs buses from Chandigarh, Amritsar and Pathankot. HRTC tickets can be booked online.

By train: Pathankot and the Kangra Valley Railway

There's no mainline station in Dharamshala. The nearest major railhead is Pathankot, about 85 km away, with trains from Delhi and Jammu. From Pathankot it's a 2 to 2.5-hour drive. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway also runs from Pathankot through the valley; its nearest station to Dharamshala is Chamunda Marg, about 21 km away, but it's slow and better as a scenic ride than as a way to arrive.

Getting up to McLeod Ganj

From lower Dharamshala, it's 9 km by road to McLeod Ganj. The Dharamshala Skyway, a 1.8 km ropeway opened in 2022, links the two in a few minutes. Taxis and local buses also run up and down all day. Inside McLeod Ganj, the centre is compact and best walked.

Which way is best for you?

  • Families and groups: a private taxi from Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar.
  • Short on time: fly to Gaggal when flights suit, with a taxi waiting.
  • Solo and budget travellers: the overnight Volvo from Delhi.
  • Combining the Golden Temple: fly to Amritsar, then drive about 5 hours.
  • Rail fans: train to Pathankot, then a taxi.

Dharamshala Weather by Month and the Best Time to Visit

The mountains catch the monsoon, making it one of the wettest places in India, and they hold snow for much of the year. Lower Dharamshala is mild; McLeod Ganj, about 600 m higher, is noticeably cooler.
