Flying into Kangra (Gaggal) Airport: The Short Way to Dharamshala

Kangra airport at Gaggal (code DHM) is the small airport that serves Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Palampur and Bir. Flying in from Delhi turns a 10-hour drive into a short flight and a taxi ride of under an hour to Dharamshala. It's a mountain airport, though, with a short runway and daytime-only operations, so it pays to plan for delays. Here's what to expect and how to get from the terminal to your hotel.

Dharamshala in the Kangra valley

What kind of airport it is

Gaggal is a single-runway airport in hilly terrain, used by smaller aircraft on routes mainly from Delhi. It handles daytime, visual-flight operations, which means low cloud, fog or heavy rain can delay, divert or cancel flights.

Airlines and timings change by season, so check current schedules with the airline rather than relying on old timetables. If you're connecting from an international flight, give yourself a generous gap in Delhi or plan a night there.

How far everything is

The airport is about 8 km from Kangra town and roughly 13–15 km from lower Dharamshala. McLeod Ganj, where most visitors stay, is about 18–20 km away and up a steep, slow final climb.

DestinationDistanceTaxi time
Dharamshala (lower town)About 13–15 km30–45 minutes
McLeod GanjAbout 18–20 km45 minutes–1 hour
PalampurAbout 38 km1–1.25 hours
BirAbout 68 km2–2.5 hours

Getting from the terminal to your hotel

Taxis usually wait outside arrivals, and the terminal is small, so it's easy to find your driver if you've booked one. Booking ahead gives you a fixed all-inclusive price and a driver who is tracking your flight, which matters here because arrival times move.

Tell us your exact hotel. In McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot, some stays are a short walk above the last point a car can reach, and we'd rather tell you before you land than at the roadside.

  • Share your flight number, not just the time; we track it.
  • Keep the driver's WhatsApp number handy; mobile signal is good around the airport.
  • If your flight is diverted or cancelled, message us and we'll re-plan the pickup.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled

Weather is the usual cause, especially in the monsoon (July–August) and on foggy winter mornings. If a flight is cancelled, the road is the backup: Delhi to Dharamshala is about 475 km, roughly 10–12 hours, and Chandigarh to Dharamshala about 240 km, 5–6½ hours. Amritsar airport, about 205 km from Dharamshala, is another fallback with more flights.

Keep a buffer day before any onward international flight from Delhi, rather than flying out of Gaggal the same morning.

Making the most of the valley

With your own car and driver you can combine McLeod Ganj with Palampur's tea gardens, Bir's paragliding and the Baijnath temple, or add Kangra Fort on the way from the airport. Most of these sit along a single valley road, so a two- or three-day loop is easy to plan.
