Overview
Manali to McLeod Ganj is roughly 210–245 km depending on the route, usually 6½ to 8 hours by taxi: down the Kullu valley to Mandi, west over the hills via Joginder Nagar into the Kangra valley, past Baijnath and Palampur, and finally up the hill from lower Dharamshala to the upper town at about 2,000 m. It's the classic hill-to-hill transfer for travellers combining Manali's snow and adventure with McLeod Ganj's monasteries, cafés and walks. With stops at Baijnath's stone temple, Palampur's tea gardens or Bir's paragliding field, it becomes a full day out. We pick you up from your Manali hotel and drop you in McLeod Ganj.

Why travellers pair Manali and McLeod Ganj
Manali and McLeod Ganj are the two hill towns most first-time visitors want to see, and they feel very different. Manali is about snow, adventure sports and Old Manali's cafés; McLeod Ganj is about Tibetan culture, monasteries and walks like Triund. A taxi between them is the easiest way to link the two, because there's no train and buses take longer with changes.
If you're flying, Kangra airport at Gaggal is about 18–20 km below McLeod Ganj, so you can arrive in Manali through Bhuntar or Chandigarh and leave from Kangra.
Breaking the journey: Bir, Baijnath and Palampur
The Kangra valley half of the drive is full of good stops. Baijnath's 13th-century stone temple sits right by the road. Bir, a short detour, is India's best-known paragliding site, with Tibetan monasteries and cafés; in season you can fly in the morning and continue to McLeod Ganj in the afternoon. Palampur has tea gardens you can walk through. Some travellers spend a night in Bir or Palampur and arrive in McLeod Ganj the next day.

- Norbulingka Institute near Dharamshala
Arriving in McLeod Ganj
McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes running off it. Cars reach most hotels on the main roads, but some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a vehicle can stop. Share your guesthouse name when you book and the driver will plan the nearest drop.
Choosing the route
Most drivers take the Mandi–Joginder Nagar route described here. When the Mandi–Kullu gorge is badly affected by work or slides, they may instead cross via other hill roads. The distance and time vary a little between them, which is why published figures range from about 210 to 245 km. We'll tell you which route the driver expects to take on the day.
