Overview

Delhi to McLeod Ganj is roughly 475–490 km by road, usually 10 to 12½ hours by taxi up the NH44 and through Una and Kangra, with the final climb through lower Dharamshala to the upper town at about 2,000 m. McLeod Ganj is where most travellers to Dharamshala actually want to stay: the Dalai Lama's temple complex, Tibetan cafés and bookshops, Bhagsu, Dharamkot and the Triund trailhead are all up here. It's a long day, so most people leave Delhi before dawn, or break the drive in Chandigarh or Anandpur Sahib. We pick you up anywhere in Delhi NCR and drop you at your McLeod Ganj hotel or as close to your guesthouse as the lanes allow.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Delhi by 4–5 am to clear the NH44 before traffic and reach McLeod Ganj before dark.
  • 2The last 10 km from lower Dharamshala climbs steeply on narrow roads; evening arrivals meet the busiest traffic of the day.
  • 3Overnight drives are possible, but we prefer daylight for the hill section after Una.
  • 4Winter fog between Delhi and Ambala (December–January) can mean a later, safer start.
  • 5If you're short of time, flying to Kangra airport and taking a 45-minute transfer is far quicker; ask us for both options.

Worthwhile stops on the way

  1. Delhi

    Pickup

  2. Murthal

Highway dhabas about an hour out of Delhi; the usual breakfast stop.

  3. Ambala or Rajpura

Fuel, tea and a stretch before the turn towards the hills.

  4. Anandpur Sahib

Gurudwara town where many families break the journey or stop for langar.

  5. Una

Last big market town before the Kangra valley.

  6. Kangra

Brajeshwari Devi temple and Kangra Fort, if you're making good time.

  7. McLeod Ganj

    Drop at your hotel

McLeod Ganj or lower Dharamshala?

Dharamshala is two towns at different heights. Lower Dharamshala, at about 1,450 m, has the bus stand, government offices, the cricket stadium and the Kotwali bazaar. McLeod Ganj sits about 7–10 km up the hill and several hundred metres higher, and is where the monasteries, cafés, guesthouses and walking trails are.

Most first-time visitors from Delhi want McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot. If your hotel is near the stadium or in the lower town, book our Delhi to Dharamshala page instead; the fare is similar, but the drop point and timing are different.

Where the car can drop you

McLeod Ganj's centre is a small square with narrow, partly one-way lanes running off it, and parts of Jogiwara Road and Temple Road are closed to through traffic at busy times. Cars can reach most hotels on the main roads, but some guesthouses in Bhagsu and Dharamkot are a short walk from the last point a vehicle can stop. Share your guesthouse name when you book and the driver will plan the nearest drop.

  • Main square and Temple Road hotels: usually door to door.
  • Bhagsu: most stays are close to the road; a few are up steps.
  • Dharamkot: a separate road up; some homestays need a short walk with luggage.

Making the long drive easier

A ten-hour-plus drive is tiring for children and older passengers. Two plans help. The first splits the trip with a night in Chandigarh or Anandpur Sahib and arrives in McLeod Ganj by lunchtime the next day. The second takes in the Devi temples on the way, visiting Chintpurni and Jwalamukhi en route to Kangra. If you're coming for a short holiday, consider flying into Kangra airport at Gaggal, about 18–20 km from McLeod Ganj, and keeping the road trip for the return.

Roughly 475–490 km depending on your start point, usually 10 to 12½ hours by taxi (approximate; verification pending).

It's upper Dharamshala, about 7–10 km above the lower town. Most hotels, monasteries and cafés are in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu and Dharamkot.

Usually, or very close. Some Bhagsu and Dharamkot stays need a short walk; tell us the name and we'll plan the drop.
