Overview
Rishikesh to Dharamshala is about 450–460 km, usually 10 to 11 hours by taxi, crossing the plains before climbing into the Kangra valley via Una. It's one of the classic links on the international traveller's route through north India: yoga and the Ganges in Rishikesh, then Tibetan culture, monasteries and the Triund trek around McLeod Ganj. There's no direct train, and buses usually run overnight, so a private car lets you travel by day and arrive at your guesthouse door, including in Bhagsu or Dharamkot.
Usual route: Across the plains of Haryana and Punjab to Una, then Kangra
