Overview

Dharamshala to Chamba is roughly 123–135 km, usually 4 to 5 hours by taxi: west out of the Kangra valley through the lower hills, up past Banikhet near Dalhousie, and down into the Ravi valley to Chamba at about 1,000 m. The alternative route climbs through Dalhousie and Khajjiar, adding scenery and an hour or so. Chamba is an old princely capital with stone temples, the Chaugan and the Bhuri Singh Museum, and it makes a good next stop after Dharamshala for travellers heading into Chamba district or towards Bharmour. We pick you up from your hotel in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj and drop you in Chamba.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Dharamshala by 8–9 am to reach Chamba by early afternoon, or later via Khajjiar.
  • 2The route via Khajjiar is slower but takes in Dalhousie and the meadow; the Banikhet route is more direct.
  • 3Starting from McLeod Ganj adds about 30 minutes for the descent to the lower town.
  • 4In winter, snow may close the Khajjiar road; the driver will use the Banikhet route.
  • 5Monsoon slides in July–August can slow both routes; travel early in the day.

Two routes to Chamba

The direct route runs west through the lower Kangra hills towards Nurpur, climbs to Banikhet just below Dalhousie, and then drops through the Ravi valley to Chamba. The scenic route goes up into Dalhousie and across to Khajjiar's meadow before descending to Chamba. The second adds an hour or more, but it's the better choice if you won't otherwise visit Dalhousie and Khajjiar.

In winter, the Khajjiar road can be closed by snow, so the driver will take the Banikhet route.

Things to do in Chamba

Chamba is an old princely capital spread along the Ravi, founded by the Varman kings, and it feels very different from the colonial hill stations above it. The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex, a group of six stone shikhara temples with slate and wooden canopies, is the town's landmark. The Chaugan, a long open ground in the middle of town, is where the Minjar fair is held each July–August, when deities from across the valley arrive in palanquins. The Bhuri Singh Museum, opened in 1908, holds more than 8,000 objects, including Chamba miniature paintings and the famous embroidered Chamba rumals.

A Kangra–Chamba circuit

Dharamshala and Chamba fit neatly into a loop through western Himachal. A popular five-day plan: two nights in McLeod Ganj, a drive to Chamba via Khajjiar, one night in Chamba, then up to Dalhousie for two nights before driving down to Pathankot or Amritsar. With one car for the whole trip, the driver handles every leg and knows the parking spots in each town.

  • McLeod Ganj: 2 nights
  • Chamba via Khajjiar: 1 night
  • Dalhousie: 2 nights
  • Exit via Pathankot or Amritsar

Flying in to Kangra

If you're arriving by air, Kangra airport at Gaggal is the nearest airport to Chamba as well as to Dharamshala. Some travellers fly into Kangra and drive straight to Chamba; it's a long afternoon, so an early flight helps. We can pick you up at the airport and go via Dharamshala or straight west.
