Overview

Dalhousie to Chamba is roughly 47–55 km, usually 1½ to 2 hours by taxi, either down through Banikhet to the Ravi valley or on the more scenic loop through Khajjiar's meadow. Chamba, at about 1,000 m on the Ravi, was the capital of an old princely state and is known for its stone temples, the long open Chaugan, the Bhuri Singh Museum and the Minjar fair. It's much lower and warmer than Dalhousie, with a lived-in old-town feel rather than a resort one. Most visitors come on a day trip from Dalhousie, often with Khajjiar on the same day. We pick you up from your Dalhousie hotel, wait in Chamba and bring you back.

Things to do in Chamba

Chamba is an old princely capital spread along the Ravi, founded by the Varman kings, and it feels very different from the colonial hill stations above it. The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex, a group of six stone shikhara temples with slate and wooden canopies, is the town's landmark. The Chaugan, a long open ground in the middle of town, is where the Minjar fair is held each July–August, when deities from across the valley arrive in palanquins. The Bhuri Singh Museum, opened in 1908, holds more than 8,000 objects, including Chamba miniature paintings and the famous embroidered Chamba rumals.

  • Chamunda Devi temple above town

Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba in one day

The most popular day trip from Dalhousie takes in all three. Leave Dalhousie around 9 am, spend an hour or two at Khajjiar's meadow and the Khajji Nag temple, then continue down to Chamba for lunch, the temples and the museum. Return to Dalhousie via Banikhet by late afternoon. It's a full day, but the distances are short.

If you'd rather not rush, stay a night in Chamba. The town is quiet in the evening, and you can walk the Chaugan and the old lanes after the day visitors leave.

Minjar fair

Chamba's biggest festival is the Minjar fair, held each year in July or August on the Chaugan. Deities from temples across the valley are carried in on palanquins, and the week ends with a procession to the Ravi, where minjars, tassels of silk and maize, are offered to the river. It's crowded and colourful, and traffic in the town centre slows. If you're visiting during the fair, start early and expect a longer walk from where the car can stop.

Going further: Bharmour and the Pangi valley

Chamba is the gateway to the higher valleys of Chamba district. Bharmour, about 60–65 km up the Budhil valley, has the ancient Chaurasi temples and is the base for the Manimahesh yatra in August–September. Further on, the Pangi valley is reached over high passes and is open only in summer. These are separate trips, best planned with a car for several days; ask us for an itinerary.
