Overview
Kasol to Dharamshala is roughly 215–235 km, usually 6½ to 8 hours by taxi: down the Parvati valley to Bhuntar, south along the Beas through the Aut tunnel to Mandi, then west over the hills via Joginder Nagar into the Kangra valley past Baijnath and Palampur to Dharamshala. It links the Parvati valley's cafés and treks with the Tibetan culture of Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, two of the most popular stops for independent travellers in Himachal. We pick you up in Kasol, Chalal, Manikaran or Tosh and drop you in Dharamshala or up in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave Kasol by 8 am to reach Dharamshala by late afternoon.
- 2The first hour, down the Parvati valley road, is narrow and slow.
- 3McLeod Ganj is another 30–40 minutes above lower Dharamshala.
- 4In the monsoon, slides in the Parvati valley and around Joginder Nagar can hold traffic.
- 5Bir is a short detour from Baijnath if you'd like to break the trip.

From the Parvati valley to the Kangra valley
The drive has three parts: down the narrow Parvati valley to the main highway, south along the Beas to Mandi, and then west over the forested hills of Joginder Nagar into the wide Kangra valley, with the Dhauladhar range ahead. It's varied and scenic, and the Kangra half is especially beautiful in spring and autumn, with tea gardens and snow on the peaks.
Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj
Most independent travellers stay in McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu or Dharamkot, above lower Dharamshala. Tell us where your stay is when you book and we'll drop you as close as the road allows. Some Bhagsu and Dharamkot guesthouses are a short walk from where cars stop.
- McLeod Ganj: monasteries and cafés
- Bhagsu: waterfall and livelier stays
- Dharamkot: quiet village above town
Breaking the trip in Bir
Bir, a short detour from Baijnath, is a natural stop between the two valleys, with paragliding, monasteries and cafés. Kasol to Bir is about four to five hours; Bir to McLeod Ganj another two to two and a half. Splitting the drive this way gives you a day or two in Bir on the way.
After a trek
If you're finishing a Kheerganga or Malana trek, we can pick you up at Barshaini or Jari instead of Kasol. Share the trek, your expected finish time and a phone number, and the driver will wait at the road head. Leaving straight from the trek, an overnight in Mandi or Bir breaks the journey well.
What the road is like
The day starts slowly: the Parvati valley road from Kasol to Bhuntar is narrow, winding and busy with buses, and it takes about an hour. At Bhuntar, the road joins the main highway and runs south along the Beas through the Aut tunnel and the Pandoh gorge to Mandi, the slowest stretch of the main road.
From Mandi, the road climbs west over forested hills through Joginder Nagar, the terminus of the old narrow-gauge railway, and drops into the Kangra valley at Baijnath, with its 13th-century stone temple right by the road. The last two hours, past the tea gardens of Palampur to Dharamshala, are the most scenic, with the snow-capped Dhauladhar range alongside.
Plan a proper lunch break in Mandi and you'll arrive in Dharamshala in good shape for the evening.
- Kasol to Bhuntar: about 1 hour
- Bhuntar to Mandi: about 1½–2 hours
- Mandi to Dharamshala: about 4–4½ hours
