Mata Shri Chintpurni, at about 978 m, is one of Himachal's most visited Shakti Peeths, and from Dharamshala it makes an easy day trip, usually combined with Jwalamukhi on the way. A Devi darshan day from Dharamshala
Dharamshala is a good base for the Kangra temples. A full day can take in Chintpurni, Jwalamukhi and Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town, with Chamunda Devi, about 15 km from Dharamshala, on a second morning. Start with Chintpurni, the furthest, then work back north through Jwalamukhi and Kangra, so you're back in Dharamshala by evening.
Booking the car for the day means the driver waits at each temple, so you don't need to watch the clock.
- Chintpurni first, the furthest.
- Jwalamukhi on the way back.
- Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra.
- Back in Dharamshala by evening.
At Chintpurni
From the bus stand, it's about 1.5 km on foot through the bazaar to the temple. Timings vary by season; one temple guide lists roughly 4 am to 10 pm in summer and about 5:30 am to 9:30 pm in winter, with longer hours in the Navratris. Weekday mornings are the calmest. We confirm timings for your date, and plan the nearest drop for anyone who can't walk far.
One way: finishing the yatra at Chintpurni
Many pilgrims end their Kangra trip at Chintpurni and continue home. From Chintpurni, it's about 3½–4½ hours to Amritsar, about 4½–5½ hours to Chandigarh, and a long day to Delhi. If you're doing that, book a one-way trip from Dharamshala that ends in your home city, rather than a return to Dharamshala.
Choosing the route
There are two ways south from Dharamshala. The first runs through Kangra town and Jwalamukhi, which suits a temple day because it passes Brajeshwari Devi and the flame temple. The second goes via Ranital and Dehra, which can be quicker when you're going straight to Chintpurni. The distances are similar, so the driver chooses on the day, depending on traffic and which temples you want to visit.
On Navratri days, the roads near Chintpurni are crowded from early morning and parking fills quickly. Leaving Dharamshala by 6 am gives you the best chance of an easy darshan. Carry cash for parking, prasad and the shoe stands, and keep a light shawl or cap for head covering inside the temple.
