Overview
Amritsar to Chintpurni is about 157 km, usually 3½ to 4½ hours by taxi across the Punjab plains and up into the hills of Una district. Many pilgrims combine the Golden Temple with Himachal's Devi temples, and Amritsar makes a convenient starting point: international and domestic flights, frequent trains, and a much shorter drive to Chintpurni than from Delhi. Chintpurni's temple sits at about 978 m, and vehicles usually stop near the bus stand, about 1.5 km below. We pick you up from your Amritsar hotel, the airport or the railway station, and wait during darshan.

Golden Temple and the Devi temples in one trip
Amritsar and the Himachal Devi temples combine naturally. A popular plan is Golden Temple darshan in the early morning, then the drive to Chintpurni, and Jwalamukhi the next day before continuing to Kangra, Chamunda Devi and Dharamshala. From there, you can fly home from Kangra airport, or return to Amritsar or Pathankot by road.
For international visitors arriving in Amritsar, this is one of the easiest ways to see both Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage sites in north India with a single driver.
At Chintpurni
Expect a walk of about 1.5 km from the bus stand through the bazaar to the temple. Published timings vary by season, roughly early morning until late evening, with longer hours in the Navratris. Weekday mornings are the quietest; Sundays and festival days can mean long queues. We confirm timings for your date.
- Leave valuables and big bags in the car.
- Carry cash for prasad and parking.
- Tell us about anyone who can't walk far.
The drive across Punjab
Most of this trip is flat, fast highway through Punjab's farmland: wheat and mustard fields in winter, paddy in summer, and roadside dhabas serving parathas and lassi. It's an easy, comfortable first half, especially in the cool months. The hills begin only in the last part of the drive, as the road climbs into Una district towards Chintpurni's ridge.
In winter, early-morning fog across Punjab can be thick, and the driver will slow down or wait for it to lift rather than push on. Summer afternoons on the plains are very hot, so an early start also keeps the car cooler.
Where to stay
Most visitors from Amritsar either return the same day or stay overnight near the temple. Chintpurni has dharamshalas and simple hotels close to the bus stand, convenient for an early walk up for aarti. Una, the district town, has a wider choice and a railway station. If you're continuing the yatra, Jwalamukhi and Kangra both have hotels and put you close to the next temples.
