Overview

Kasol to Chandigarh is roughly 270–290 km, usually 7 to 8½ hours by taxi: about an hour down the narrow Parvati valley road to Bhuntar, then south on the Kiratpur–Manali highway through the Aut tunnel, Mandi, the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane and Ropar into the Tricity. It's the shortest way out of the hills from Kasol, and a common end to a Parvati valley trip for travellers catching a flight from Chandigarh airport or a train or bus onward to Delhi. Leave after breakfast and you're in Chandigarh by late afternoon. We pick you up in Kasol or at a trek road head and drop you anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Kasol by 8 am to reach Chandigarh by mid to late afternoon.
  • 2Catching a flight? Allow at least three hours of buffer; the hill section is hard to predict, especially in the monsoon.
  • 3The Parvati valley road to Bhuntar is narrow and slow; the highway after Bhuntar is much easier.
  • 4The Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane has made the southern half of the drive quick.
  • 5Pickups from Manikaran, Tosh, Barshaini or Jari can be arranged.

Catching a flight or train in Chandigarh

Chandigarh airport has flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities, and the railway station has fast trains to Delhi. That makes Chandigarh a good exit for Kasol trips, even for travellers who live in Delhi. Plan a morning departure from Kasol and an evening flight or train, with a buffer of three hours or more in case of delays on the hill section.

If your flight is early the next morning, stay a night in Chandigarh rather than leaving Kasol before dawn.

Where in the Tricity we can drop you

We drop anywhere in the Tricity: homes and hotels in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula and Zirakpur, Chandigarh airport, Chandigarh railway station, and ISBT Sector 43 or 17. For a flight or train, tell us the time when you book and we'll plan the pickup with a buffer for the hill roads.

After a trek

Many travellers finish a Kasol trip with a trek: Kheerganga ends at Barshaini, and Malana at Jari or the Malana road head. We can pick you up at the trailhead instead of Kasol, saving a local taxi and an hour of transfers. Share the trek, your expected finish time and a phone number, and the driver will wait at the road head.

  • Kheerganga: pickup at Barshaini
  • Tosh: pickup at Tosh or Barshaini
  • Malana: pickup at Jari

Taxi or bus from Kasol

Buses from Bhuntar to Chandigarh are cheap and frequent, but you'll first need to get from Kasol to Bhuntar, and the buses stop often. A taxi makes sense for groups of three or more, families, travellers with heavy bags, or anyone catching a flight, because it leaves on your schedule and goes door to door.

Leaving Kasol: practical tips

Kasol's main road is narrow and busy in the morning with buses and trekkers, so the driver may wait at the nearest wide point to your guesthouse. Pack the night before, keep cash for the guesthouse, and download offline maps, since mobile data in the valley can be patchy. If you're staying in Chalal across the river, you'll need to walk your bags over the footbridge to the road; tell us and we'll time the pickup.

In the monsoon, the Parvati valley road can be closed for a few hours by small slides. If you have a flight, consider leaving the afternoon before and staying in Mandi or Chandigarh.

Weather & road conditions

March–June and September–November: dry roads and easy driving.
July–August: slides in the Parvati valley and the Mandi–Kullu gorge; leave early and keep a buffer.
December–February: cold mornings in Kasol; the roads usually stay open.

Pickup options

  • • Kasol guesthouses (nearest road point)
  • • Chalal, Manikaran and Tosh
  • • Jari and Barshaini (trek ends)

Other ways to travel

Buses run from Bhuntar to Chandigarh throughout the day; reach Bhuntar by local bus or taxi from Kasol. There's no railway in the valley.
