Overview
Kheerganga is a meadow at about 2,950 m at the head of the Parvati valley, with a natural hot spring and a small Shiva temple at the top. The walk up from Barshaini, about 12 km through forest, waterfalls and the village of Nakthan, is one of the most popular treks in Himachal. This package brings you from Chandigarh to Kasol, sends you up with a local guide for a night near the top, and brings you back down the next day for a last night in Kasol and Manikaran's hot springs.

The trail
From the road end at Barshaini, the trail crosses the river and climbs through Nakthan village before entering forest. There are two routes, one past the Rudra Nag waterfall and a steeper one through the forest; guides usually take the waterfall route up. The final stretch opens onto the meadow at Kheerganga.
Staying at the top
Facilities at Kheerganga are seasonal and simple: tents or basic rooms, blankets and hot food. Nights are cold, so bring warm layers. Carry out everything you bring in; litter is a serious problem on popular trails.
Who this suits
This trek suits fit beginners, students and groups of friends. Children over about ten who walk regularly can usually manage it. It's not suitable for people with knee problems because of the long descent.
What to pack
Good walking shoes with grip, a small daypack, two litres of water, snacks, a rain jacket, a fleece or down jacket for the night, a torch, sunscreen and a cap. Carry a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to use the hot spring. Leave heavy luggage at your Kasol guesthouse; you'll be back there the next night.
Mobile signal disappears beyond Barshaini on most networks, so download maps and tell your guesthouse your plans. Your guide carries a basic first-aid kit and knows the trail well.
If it rains
Rain makes the trail slippery and swells the streams. Your guide may delay the start, choose the gentler route or turn back if conditions are unsafe; the decision is about safety, not schedules.

Good to know: roads, permits and safety
- Overnight camping at Kheerganga has been restricted by the authorities at times. We only book stays that are allowed when you travel; if none are, you'll walk up and down in a long day and stay in Kasol or Pulga.
- Wear proper walking shoes; the trail is rocky and muddy in places.
- Bathe respectfully in the hot pool, which is part of the temple; separate areas are marked for women.
