Overview
Ten days through the quiet valleys between the Kullu and Kangra regions, staying in homestays and small hotels away from the crowds. You start in Jibhi and the Tirthan valley, cross into the Sainj valley for Shangarh's meadow, follow back roads to Barot on the Uhl river, then end with Bir's monasteries and paragliders and the Tibetan town of McLeod Ganj. The drives are short to moderate, and every stop has a walk worth doing. It's the trip we suggest to travellers who say they want to see the real Himachal.

The route in short
The route forms an arc from the Kullu region to the Kangra valley without retracing steps.
- Jibhi and Tirthan: forests, rivers and tower temples
- Shangarh: a sacred meadow
- Barot: river and forest
- Bir and McLeod Ganj: Tibetan culture and paragliding
Who this suits
Travellers from abroad, photographers, writers and families with children who like walking will all enjoy this trip. It suits people who'd rather spend an evening by a river than on a busy Mall Road.
