How to Reach Kasol: From Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali and by Air

Kasol has no railway station or airport of its own; you reach it by road through the Kullu valley, turning off at Bhuntar into the Parvati valley. The last stretch is a narrow mountain road along the river. Here's every way to get there, how long it takes and which suits whom. It's part of our Kullu valley travel guide.

Distances and travel times

Times are for a private car in normal traffic. The Parvati valley road is narrow and can be slow at weekends or after rain.

By road

From Delhi and Chandigarh, the route follows the Manali highway via Bilaspur, Mandi and Aut to Bhuntar, then turns off into the Parvati valley through Jari to Kasol. A private taxi is the most comfortable option and lets you stop at Manikaran or carry on to Tosh. Our Delhi to Kasol and Chandigarh to Kasol pages show fares by vehicle, and we also run Manali–Kasol and Kullu–Kasol transfers.

By bus

Overnight Volvo buses run from Delhi to Bhuntar or Kullu, and some go direct to Kasol, especially in season. From Bhuntar, local HRTC buses and shared taxis run up the Parvati valley to Kasol and Manikaran throughout the day. Buses are the cheapest option and HRTC tickets can be booked online.

By train

There's no railway to Kasol. The most practical railhead is Chandigarh, about 290 km away, with fast trains from Delhi; the closest broad-gauge stations, such as Kiratpur Sahib and Una, are still several hours' drive. From any of them, continue by taxi or bus.

By air

The nearest airport is Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar, about 31 km from Kasol, with a few weather-dependent flights from Delhi. Chandigarh airport has many more flights, and the drive from there takes 7 to 9 hours. We meet flights at Bhuntar and Delhi; see our Kullu airport to Kasol transfer.

Which way is best?

  • Families and groups: a private taxi from Delhi or Chandigarh.
  • Short on time: fly to Bhuntar when flights run, then a short transfer.
  • Budget travellers: an overnight Volvo to Bhuntar and a local bus.
  • Combining with Manali: drive Manali–Kasol in under three hours.

Getting around the Parvati valley

Once you're in Kasol, local buses and shared taxis run along the valley road to Manikaran, Barshaini and back to Bhuntar several times a day, but they get crowded and stop early in the evening. A private taxi is more flexible for day trips to Tosh, the Kheerganga trailhead at Barshaini, or back to Kullu and Naggar. Parking in Kasol itself is limited at weekends, so drivers usually drop you near your guesthouse and wait outside the village.

Bijli Mahadev Temple: The Lightning Shrine Above Kullu

High on a ridge above the meeting of the Beas and Parvati rivers, Bijli Mahadev is one of the Kullu valley's most remarkable temples. Its tall wooden staff is said to attract lightning, which, according to local belief, periodically shatters the Shiva lingam inside, to be restored by the priest. The temple also has some of the widest views in the valley. It's part of our Kullu valley travel guide.
