Manali Airport Guide: Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali) and the Alternatives

Manali has no airport of its own. The nearest is Kullu–Manali airport at Bhuntar, about 50 km south of town, a small airport with a short runway and only a few flights. Many travellers find it easier to fly into Chandigarh, or sometimes Kangra or Amritsar, and drive the rest of the way. This guide explains each option, how to get from the airport to Manali and how to plan around weather delays. It's part of our Manali travel guide.

Bhuntar: the Kullu–Manali airport

Bhuntar airport sits beside the Beas, a little south of Kullu town. Its runway is short, and the approach is through a narrow mountain valley, so only small turboprop aircraft use it. Scheduled flights, mainly from Delhi, have been operated by Alliance Air, taking around 1 hour 20 minutes; other routes have come and gone under regional connectivity schemes. Check current schedules with the airlines before planning around them.

Weather is the big issue. Flights are often delayed or cancelled when there's low cloud, rain or snow, especially in winter and the monsoon. If your trip has a fixed date to be in Manali, or a connection to catch on the way home, have a backup plan, and avoid tight connections at Delhi.

Getting from Bhuntar airport to Manali

The drive to Manali follows the Beas up the valley through Kullu, about 50 km, taking 1.5 to 2 hours in normal traffic. Pre-booked taxis are the easiest option; local taxis also wait outside the terminal at flight times. We meet every flight at Bhuntar, track delays, and wait if your flight is late.

Buses run along the main road outside the airport towards Kullu and Manali, which works for light travellers on a budget.

Flying to Chandigarh instead

Chandigarh has far more flights, from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities, and they're rarely affected by mountain weather. From there it's about 305 km to Manali, 7 to 9 hours by road through Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu. Fly in early, and you can reach Manali the same evening. For families with luggage, it's often the most dependable option overall.

Kangra, Amritsar and Delhi

Kangra airport at Gaggal, near Dharamshala, makes sense if you're visiting Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj as well. Amritsar suits trips that combine the Golden Temple with the mountains. International travellers usually land in Delhi; from there you can fly on to Chandigarh or Bhuntar, take a fast train to Chandigarh, or drive straight to Manali in a private car, ideally after a night's rest.

Tips for flying to Manali

  • Book the earliest flight of the day to Bhuntar: morning weather is usually clearer.
  • Keep a buffer day before any onward international flight.
  • Check baggage limits: small aircraft can have lower allowances.
  • If a Bhuntar flight is cancelled, a taxi from Chandigarh or Delhi is the usual fallback; tell us and we'll adjust the pickup.
  • Carry warm layers in your hand luggage in winter; Bhuntar is cold on arrival.
