Naggar Castle and the Roerich Estate: A Guide to Naggar

Naggar was the capital of the Kullu kingdom for centuries before the court moved to Kullu, and it remains one of the most atmospheric places in the valley. Its castle, built of timber and stone in the traditional Himalayan style, looks out over the Beas from a hillside of orchards and deodars, and just above it is the estate where the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich spent his last years. It's an easy half day from Manali or Kullu. It's part of our Kullu valley travel guide.

Naggar castle

Tradition dates Naggar castle to the 15th century, when the rajas of Kullu ruled from here. It's built in the kath-kuni style of the western Himalaya, with alternating layers of timber and stone that help it survive earthquakes; it came through the great 1905 Kangra earthquake largely intact. Today the castle is a heritage hotel run by the state tourism corporation, with a small museum, a courtyard shrine and a terrace with sweeping views over the valley. Day visitors usually pay a small entry fee; check timings at the gate.

Other sights

  • Tripura Sundari temple: a pagoda-style wooden temple above the castle.
  • Gauri Shankar temple: a small stone Shiva temple below the castle.
  • Jana falls: a waterfall up the hill, with a village known for local food.
  • Orchard walks: apples from August to October.

Getting there and planning

From Manali, take the left-bank road via Aleo and Jagatsukh, about 45 minutes by car. From Kullu, cross to the left bank at Patlikuhl. Naggar combines well with a rafting run, with Bijli Mahadev, or with a night at the castle hotel. Our Manali and Kullu taxis cover the trip.

Best time to visit

Naggar is lovely from March to June, when the orchards blossom and the weather is mild, and from September to November, when the apples ripen and the air is clear. The monsoon brings rain but few crowds. In winter the castle and gallery stay open, and the snow peaks across the valley are at their most dramatic, though the left-bank road can be icy early in the day.

Bijli Mahadev Temple: The Lightning Shrine Above Kullu

High on a ridge above the meeting of the Beas and Parvati rivers, Bijli Mahadev is one of the Kullu valley's most remarkable temples. Its tall wooden staff is said to attract lightning, which, according to local belief, periodically shatters the Shiva lingam inside, to be restored by the priest. The temple also has some of the widest views in the valley. It's part of our Kullu valley travel guide.

Kullu Dussehra: Dates, Rituals and How to Visit

Kullu Dussehra is unlike Dussehra anywhere else in India. Instead of ending on Vijayadashami, it begins that day and runs for a week, as hundreds of village deities are carried in decorated palanquins to Dhalpur maidan in Kullu to pay homage to Lord Raghunath. It's a spectacle of music, procession and colour, and one of Himachal's great festivals. It's part of our Kullu valley travel guide.
