Where rafting runs
Commercial rafting on the Beas runs on stretches between Kullu and Manali and around Kullu town, with operators' put-in points along the main road. Common runs last from roughly 30 minutes to an hour or two on the water, covering a few kilometres to over ten. Most rapids are rated easy to moderate (around Grade II to III), suitable for first-timers with a guide.
Season
Rafting usually runs from about March to June and again from late September to October or November, depending on water levels. It's suspended in the monsoon, July to August, when the Beas runs high, fast and dangerous, and after heavy rain at any time. In early spring and late autumn the water is very cold, so wetsuits are worth asking for.
Prices
Prices are set by operators and vary with the length of the run and the season, from a few hundred rupees per person for a short stretch to more for longer runs. Photos and videos often cost extra. Agree the price, the length of the run and what's included before you start. Treat any figure you see online as indicative.
Choosing a safe operator
- Use operators registered with the state tourism department; ask to see the registration.
- Every rafter should get a life jacket and helmet that fit properly.
- A safety briefing should come before you get in the raft.
- Experienced guides should steer, with a safety kayaker on bigger runs.
- Don't raft after heavy rain or when the river is visibly high; a good operator will cancel.
- Check age and health limits, and tell the guide if you can't swim.
What to bring
Combine rafting with Naggar or Kasol on the same day, or with paragliding at Solang near Manali.
- Quick-drying clothes and a change of dry clothes.
- Sandals with straps or old trainers: no flip-flops.
- Sunscreen and a cord for glasses.
- Leave phones and valuables in the car or with the operator.
Combining rafting with a day in the valley
Rafting is usually a morning or late-afternoon activity of an hour or two, so it combines easily with sightseeing. From Manali, raft on the way down to Kullu, then visit Naggar or Bijli Mahadev. From Kasol, stop at a rafting point on the main road on the way to or from Manali. Plan for a change of clothes in the car, as you'll get soaked.
