Where Solang is and how to get there

Solang lies at roughly 2,500 m, in a side valley above the village of Palchan, about 14 km from Manali. By taxi it takes 30 to 45 minutes in normal traffic. In peak snow season the last few kilometres can jam badly, and in heavy snow the police sometimes stop cars short of the valley, from where you walk or take a local shared vehicle.

There's no permit for Solang. Most visitors combine it with the Atal Tunnel, whose south portal is a further 10 km or so up the same road. Taxis from Manali usually offer Solang alone as a half day, or Solang plus the tunnel and Sissu as a full day.

Snow at Solang: when to go

For snow on the ground, go between late December and early March. January and February are the most reliable months, with fresh falls most weeks in a normal winter. In a dry winter there may be only patchy snow on the meadow, with more higher up on the ropeway.

From April to June the snow melts back, the meadow turns green and paragliding takes over. July and August are monsoon months with cloud, rain and some days when flights don't operate. September to November are clear and calm, a good time for views and photography but with little or no snow.

Things to do in Solang valley

Most of the activity happens on the open slope at the head of the valley. Operators are licensed locally, and in season you'll find dozens of stalls offering rides and equipment.

  • Ropeway (gondola): runs from the valley floor up the slope towards Mount Phatru, with wide views of the Pir Panjal range.
  • Paragliding: tandem flights with a licensed pilot, from short hops off the lower slope to longer flights from higher take-off points.
  • Skiing and snowboarding: equipment and instructors for beginners in winter; serious skiers usually head higher.
  • Snow tubing, snow scooters and sledging in winter.
  • Zorbing, quad bikes and horse rides in summer.
  • Short walks to the Anjani Mahadev temple area and the nearby waterfall for those who want quieter corners.

What a Solang day costs

Prices are set by local operators and change every season, so treat these as indicative only. Published estimates put the ropeway at roughly ₹500 to ₹750 per person. Tandem paragliding ranges from about ₹1,000 for a short flight to ₹3,000 or ₹4,000 for a longer one from a higher launch. Snow suit and boot rental is usually a few hundred rupees per person.

Agree the price, duration and what's included before you pay, especially for paragliding and snow scooters. Ask whether the price is for the 'short' or 'long' flight, and whether photos or video cost extra. A taxi from Manali to Solang and back costs the same however long you stay, within the day's limits, so you don't need to rush.

Safety at Solang

Use operators with a visible licence or registration, and check that harnesses and helmets are in good condition. Paragliding depends on the wind, and a responsible pilot will cancel if it's gusty; don't push for a flight in bad weather.

On snow days the slope can be icy and crowded. Watch children near the snow scooters and tubing runs, wear proper boots, and keep sunglasses on against the glare. If you're arriving from the plains, remember that 2,500 m is high enough to feel breathless when you exert yourself.

Solang or Rohtang?

Solang is lower, closer, open all year and needs no permit, so it's the dependable choice, especially from December to April when Rohtang is closed. Rohtang is higher and wilder, with more snow in early summer, but needs a vehicle permit and is only open from about May to November. Our Rohtang Pass guide compares the two in more detail.
