Overview

Chandigarh to Jwalamukhi is roughly 200–210 km, usually 5 to 6 hours by taxi via Una, with the official Kangra district figure about 200 km from Chandigarh airport. Jwalamukhi's temple is unique among the Shakti Peeths: there is no idol, and pilgrims worship natural flames that burn from the rock inside the sanctum. It sits in Kangra district at about 610 m, and the route passes close to Chintpurni, about 35 km before Jwalamukhi, so many families visit both on the same trip. We pick you up anywhere in the Tricity and the driver waits during darshan.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave by 6 am: it's a full morning's drive, and the temple closes briefly around midday.
  • 2Tell us if you want to stop at Chintpurni on the way; it adds roughly 2–3 hours including darshan.
  • 3Parking is in the town below the temple, followed by a short walk up through the market.
  • 4For a same-day return, plan on 11–12 hours in total. An overnight in Jwalamukhi or Kangra is more relaxed.
  • 5The roads after Una are hilly but wide; motion sickness is less of an issue than on the Shimla or Manali routes.

Jwalamukhi temple timings and aarti

The Kangra temples administration lists summer opening as about 6 am to 11:30 am and 12:30 pm to 10 pm, and winter as about 7 am to 11 am and 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm, with a short closure around midday. Aarti is at about 6 am and 8 pm in summer, and 7 am and 7 pm in winter. Hours can change during festivals, so we confirm them for your date.

Inside, the flames burn from openings in the rock, and the temple is managed by the state's temple trust. Photography rules and queue arrangements can change; follow the instructions of the temple staff.

  • Arrive before 11 am or after 12:30 pm to avoid the midday closure.
  • Weekday mornings are usually quieter.
  • Prasad shops and shoe stands are on the approach to the temple.

Continuing to Kangra and Dharamshala

Jwalamukhi is the gateway to the Kangra valley temples. Brajeshwari Devi in Kangra town and Chamunda Devi near Dharamshala are each within a couple of hours, and Baglamukhi temple at Bankhandi is also nearby. With a car for two or three days you can complete the circuit and end with a night in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj.

Kangra airport at Gaggal is also close, so some families fly back to Delhi after the yatra instead of driving the whole way.

What makes Jwalamukhi different

Most Himachal temples house an idol; Jwalamukhi doesn't. According to tradition, it's one of the Shakti Peeths, and the goddess is worshipped here as the flames that burn steadily from small openings in the rock of the sanctum. Pilgrims file past the flames rather than an image, which is why the queue moves in a slightly different way from other temples.

The town around the temple is small and easy to walk. There are shops selling chunni, coconuts and prasad on the approach, and simple restaurants for a meal after darshan. If you're staying overnight, the evening aarti is a good time to visit, when the temple is lit and the crowd is mostly local families.

Because the drive from Chandigarh is long, we'd suggest one overnight on this trip: either in Jwalamukhi, or 30–40 minutes on in Kangra, which has more hotels and puts you close to Brajeshwari Devi for the next morning.
