Overview
Chandigarh to Narkanda is roughly 150–170 km, usually 5 to 6 hours by taxi up the NH5 through Kalka, Solan and Shimla, then another 60–65 km along the old Hindustan–Tibet road via Kufri and Theog. Narkanda sits on a ridge at roughly 2,700 m, much higher than Shimla, and it's one of the closest places to Chandigarh for reliable winter snow and beginner skiing. In spring and autumn, it's quiet apple country with views of the higher Himalaya from Hatu Peak. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, or at the airport or station, and drive you straight to your hotel in Narkanda.

Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave Chandigarh by 7–8 am to clear Shimla before its midday traffic.
- 2The four-lane to Shimla is quick; the road beyond Shimla, through Dhalli, Kufri and Theog, is a busy two-lane highway.
- 3Beyond Shimla, the road can close for a day or two after heavy snow; we check conditions before setting out in winter.
- 4Avoid entering Shimla's centre: the driver uses the bypass through Dhalli where possible.
- 5Apple trucks crowd the road from late July to October; allow extra time.

Narkanda or Shimla for snow?
Shimla gets snow in some winters, but often only for a few days. Kufri, about 16 km beyond Shimla, gets it more reliably. Narkanda, at about 2,700 m, is higher again, and in most winters keeps snow on the slopes near town for weeks, which is why it's where the skiing happens. If seeing snow is the main reason for your trip from Chandigarh, Narkanda is the better bet, though it's a longer drive.
Things to do in Narkanda
The main outing is Hatu Peak, at around 3,400 m, about 7–8 km above Narkanda on a narrow road, with a carved wooden temple to Hatu Mata and wide views on clear days. Tannu Jubbar lake is a short drive from town. In winter, the slopes near Narkanda offer beginner skiing in good snow years, with equipment hire in season. Below the ridge, the orchards of Kotgarh and Thanedar are where Samuel Stokes is credited with introducing new apple varieties.

Splitting the trip with a night in Shimla
Five to six hours is manageable in one go, but some families prefer a night in Shimla first, especially with young children or in winter. That turns the trip into a three-hour first day and a two-hour second morning, with time for the Mall Road and the Ridge in between. With one car for the whole trip, the driver stays with you and can take you up to Hatu Peak from Narkanda.
Going on from Narkanda
Narkanda is the gateway to the upper Sutlej valley. Beyond it, the road drops to Rampur and continues to Sarahan, Sangla, Chitkul and Kinnaur. If you're heading that way, keep the same car; it saves arranging local taxis in towns where they're fewer and more expensive.
Practical tips for a winter trip
In January and February, set out with warm layers, gloves and proper shoes, not just a light jacket. Mobile signal is good along the highway, but cash is useful for parking, ski hire and dhabas. If fresh snow has fallen, the road beyond Shimla or Theog may open late in the morning, so a slightly later departure from Chandigarh can actually be quicker. We'll call the day before to confirm conditions.
