Chandigarh to Shimla Taxi Cost: What You Should Really Pay

Chandigarh to Shimla is only about 115 km, yet one-way taxi quotes vary from under ₹2,000 to nearly ₹6,000, sometimes from the same company. The difference is almost never the car: it's how the fare is built and what's left out. Here's how to read a quote, and what an all-inclusive price should look like.

How hill taxi fares are built

Most outstation taxis charge per kilometre with a daily minimum, often around 250 km a day. That's why a 115 km trip is frequently billed as 250 km: the driver and car are committed for the day, and usually return empty. On top come tolls, the Himachal entry tax for taxis registered outside the state, parking, and the driver's allowance if an overnight stay is needed.

What operators publish

Published one-way fares we found for this route ranged widely. One operator's own pages listed about ₹3,300 for a sedan and ₹4,200–5,400 for an Innova on some pages, with much lower and much higher figures on others, and they excluded tolls and the state levy. Treat a very low headline fare as a sign that something will be added later.

VehicleOur sample all-inclusive fare (one way)What's in it
Sedan (up to 4)₹3,250Fuel, driver, tolls, HP entry tax
SUV (up to 6)₹4,000Same
Innova Crysta (up to 6)₹4,750Same
Tempo Traveller (12)₹7,000Same

The extras to ask about

Ask for a quote that lists each of these as included or excluded, in writing.

  • Tolls: small on this route, but often 'extra' on cheap quotes.
  • Himachal entry tax: ₹100 per day for taxis registered outside Himachal (as reported from April 2026). HP-registered taxis are exempt.
  • Parking at sightseeing stops such as the Timber Trail or Pinjore Gardens.
  • Waiting time and detours, such as a Kasauli stop.
  • Night allowance if the driver has to stay over.

One way, round trip or a day trip?

Your trip type changes the maths more than the vehicle does. A one-way drop usually carries the full daily minimum, because the driver returns empty. A same-day round trip, such as Chandigarh to Kasauli or Shimla and back, often costs only a little more than one way, since the car is already committed for the day. If you're staying in Shimla for a few days and then going on to Manali, booking the whole trip with one car usually beats separate transfers, because there are no empty return legs to pay for.

Whatever you choose, compare quotes on the same basis: total price per vehicle, with tolls, state entry tax, parking and allowances clearly marked as included or excluded.

Ways to pay less without nasty surprises

A round trip with the same car is often cheaper per leg than two one-way fares, because the operator isn't paying for an empty return. Off-peak weekdays are easier to book than Friday afternoons. If you're staying several days, a multi-day booking can work out better than separate transfers. Our Shimla & Manali tour is an example.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 115 km trip billed as 250 km?+

Most outstation taxis have a daily minimum because the car and driver are committed for the day and usually return empty. Good quotes say so upfront.

Do I have to pay Himachal entry tax?+

Taxis registered outside Himachal pay it at the first barrier. Our quotes include it; HP-registered taxis are exempt.

Is a round trip cheaper?+

Often, yes. Ask for a round-trip or multi-day quote if you're coming back the same way.
