Overview

Amritsar to Naina Devi is roughly 200–230 km, usually 4½ to 5½ hours by taxi across Punjab through Jalandhar and Nawanshahr to Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib, then the 18 km hill road up to the temple ridge. Shri Naina Devi Ji, at about 1,177 m above the Govind Sagar reservoir in Bilaspur district, is one of Himachal's best-known Shakti Peeths. For Sikh and Hindu families from Amritsar, the route has a special appeal: it passes Anandpur Sahib, home to Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, just 20 km before the temple. We pick you up from your Amritsar hotel, the airport or the station, and the driver waits during darshan.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Amritsar by 6–7 am to reach Naina Devi before the late-morning crowds.
  • 2Cars park in the lower area; from there it's steps or the ropeway to the shrine.
  • 3On Navratri days and Sundays, the hill road and parking are much slower.
  • 4Stopping at Anandpur Sahib adds an hour or two and fits easily on the way.
  • 5Continuing to Chintpurni? It's roughly 2–2½ hours from Naina Devi.

Darshan at Naina Devi

From the parking area, walk up the steps through the bazaar or take the ropeway; the Rupnagar district administration publishes ropeway timings, which change with the season. The temple trust lists long daily darshan hours, extended during the Navratri fairs. On weekdays outside festivals, darshan is usually quick; on Navratri days and Sundays, expect long queues.

Carry cash for parking, the ropeway and prasad, wear comfortable shoes for the steps, and keep big bags in the car.

Anandpur Sahib on the way

Anandpur Sahib, about 20 km from Naina Devi, is one of Sikhism's most important towns: Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib is where the Khalsa was founded, and the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum tells the story of Sikh history. Many families from Amritsar stop here for langar and darshan before going on to Naina Devi, or stay the night and climb to the temple the next morning.

Starting a Devi darshan from Amritsar

Naina Devi is the southernmost of Himachal's main Devi temples, so from Amritsar it's often the first stop on a loop. A practical three- or four-day plan: Naina Devi on day one, Chintpurni on day two, Jwalamukhi and Kangra's Brajeshwari Devi on day three, then Chamunda Devi and back to Amritsar via Pathankot. The loop avoids driving the same road twice.

  • Day 1: Amritsar to Naina Devi
  • Day 2: Chintpurni
  • Day 3: Jwalamukhi and Kangra
  • Day 4: Chamunda Devi, back via Pathankot

Where to stay

Naina Devi town has dharamshalas and simple hotels close to the temple, which make an early-morning darshan easy. Anandpur Sahib has more choice, including gurudwara sarais. If you'd rather return the same day, it's possible with a very early start, but it makes for ten hours of driving plus darshan.

Practical tips for pilgrims from Amritsar

Punjab's highways are fast, but traffic through Jalandhar and Phagwara builds from about 9 am, so an early departure saves time. Keep a light shawl or cap for head covering at both Anandpur Sahib and the temple, and carry some cash: parking, the ropeway, langar donations and prasad are mostly paid in cash. For elderly passengers, the ropeway in both directions is the easiest option; the driver will park as close to the lower station as allowed. If you're visiting on a Navratri day, plan to stay overnight near the temple so you can join the queue at first light.
