Shri Naina Devi Ji, at about 1,177 m above the Govind Sagar reservoir, is one of Himachal's best-known Shakti Peeths and the usual first stop on the Devi darshan from Delhi. Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Delhi by 4–5 am to reach Naina Devi by early afternoon.
  • 2Cars park in the lower area; from there it's steps or the ropeway to the shrine.
  • 3On Navratri days and Sundays, traffic and parking near the temple are much slower.
  • 4With elderly passengers, the ropeway saves the climb; check its hours on the day.

Darshan at Naina Devi: ropeway, steps and crowds

The temple trust lists long daily darshan hours, extended during the Navratri fairs. From the parking area, you can walk up the steps through the bazaar or take the ropeway; the Rupnagar district administration publishes ropeway timings, which change with the season. On weekdays outside festivals, darshan is usually quick. On Navratri days and Sundays, expect long queues and slow traffic on the hill road.

Carry cash for parking, the ropeway and prasad, and keep valuables and big bags in the car.

Starting the Devi darshan from Delhi

Naina Devi is the nearest of Himachal's major Shakti Peeths to Delhi, so most Devi darshan trips start here. A practical three- to four-day plan: Delhi to Naina Devi on day one, Chintpurni on day two, Jwalamukhi and Kangra's Brajeshwari Devi on day three, and Chamunda Devi before returning or flying out from Kangra airport. With one car and driver throughout, you don't need to arrange transport at each temple.

  • Day 1: Delhi to Naina Devi.
  • Day 2: Naina Devi to Chintpurni.
  • Day 3: Jwalamukhi and Kangra.
  • Day 4: Chamunda Devi, then home or Kangra airport.

Where to stay

Naina Devi town has dharamshalas and simple hotels close to the temple, which make an early-morning darshan easy. Anandpur Sahib, about 20 km away, has more options and makes a good base if you want to visit the gurudwaras as well. Families who prefer bigger hotels sometimes stay in Chandigarh, about 2½–3 hours away.

Tips for an easy darshan

Start early, and if you can, reach Naina Devi on a weekday. Keep shoes, phones and bags in the car where possible, or use the lockers and shoe stands near the temple. Wear comfortable footwear for the steps and carry a light shawl or cap for head covering. Elderly pilgrims should take the ropeway in both directions; ask the driver to park as close to the lower station as he's allowed. On Navratri days, traffic on the hill road can back up for hours, so arrive at first light or plan to stay the night before.
