Driving tips for this route
- 1Leave Kullu by 8 am to reach Solang before the mid-morning crowds from Manali.
- 2The Manali stretch can be slow on weekends; the road beyond Manali to Solang is busiest between 10 am and 2 pm.
- 3After fresh snow, the Solang road may be closed beyond Palchan until it's cleared; we check conditions before setting out.
- 4Snow clothing and boots can be hired at Palchan and Solang; agree the price before you take them.
- 5Add the Atal Tunnel and Sissu if the road is open and you'd like a longer day; it needs more time and is subject to restrictions.

What to do at Solang
Solang is a wide meadow under ski slopes, at about 2,560 m. In winter, it's the closest place to Kullu and Manali for snow play, sledging and beginner skiing, with instructors and equipment available in season. A ropeway climbs the slope above the meadow. From spring to autumn, paragliding, ATV rides, zorbing and horse rides take over. Activity prices vary by season and operator, so agree them before you start.
On busy days, the meadow can be crowded by late morning, which is another reason to start early from Kullu.
- Snow play and skiing (winter)
- Solang ropeway
- Paragliding (weather permitting)
- ATV rides and zorbing
Staying in Kullu, visiting Solang
Kullu is a quieter, lower and often cheaper base than Manali, and many families stay there and travel up for the day. The trade-off is an extra 1½ to 2 hours each way. With an early start, you can spend three to four hours at Solang, stop at Hadimba temple or the Mall Road in Manali on the way back, and be in Kullu by evening.
Winter snow and road closures
Solang gets snow most winters, but heavy falls also close the road beyond Palchan until it's cleared, sometimes for a day or more. In those conditions, taxis may only go as far as the road is open, and you continue on foot or by local arrangement. We check the road before leaving Kullu, and if Solang is closed, we'll suggest an alternative such as Kothi or Gulaba, subject to local rules.
Solang and the Atal Tunnel
Beyond Solang, the road continues to the Atal Tunnel's south portal and through to Sissu in the Lahaul valley. Adding Sissu makes a long day from Kullu, and the tunnel road has its own restrictions and occasional closures, especially in winter. If you'd like to include it, tell us when booking so we can check the rules for the date and plan the timing.
