Overview

Kullu to Jibhi is roughly 55–65 km, usually 2 to 2½ hours by taxi: south down the highway past Bhuntar to Aut, then about 31 km up the narrow Banjar valley road through Banjar town to Jibhi. Jibhi is a small village at roughly 1,600 m with wooden homestays among cedar forest, a waterfall and easy walks, and Jalori Pass, about 12 km above, is the start of the Serolsar lake walk. From Kullu it's an easy half-day transfer, or a long day trip if you want to see Jalori. We pick you up from your Kullu hotel and drive you to your Jibhi homestay, or as close as the road allows.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Kullu by mid-morning to reach Jibhi for lunch; the Banjar road is best driven in daylight.
  • 2After Aut, the road narrows and climbs; expect slow sections and oncoming buses on bends.
  • 3Some homestays are a short walk downhill from the road; tell us yours so we know where to stop.
  • 4In winter, snow can close Jalori Pass, though Jibhi itself usually stays reachable.
  • 5For a day trip to Jalori, add 30–45 minutes each way above Jibhi.

What to do in Jibhi

Jibhi is about slowing down rather than sightseeing. Walks lead to Jibhi waterfall and the old temples in nearby villages, and Chehni Kothi, a tall stone-and-timber tower, is a short drive and walk away. Jalori Pass, at around 3,100 m, is about 12 km above Jibhi, and from there trails lead to Serolsar lake and the Raghupur fort ruins. The Tirthan valley, with trout farms and the Great Himalayan National Park, is just below Banjar.

Kullu, Jibhi and Tirthan in one trip

Kullu makes a natural base for the quieter valleys to its south. A good plan is two nights in Kullu or Manali, then two or three in Jibhi, with day trips to Jalori and the Tirthan valley. On the way out, the drive back to Chandigarh or Delhi rejoins the main highway at Aut, so you don't need to backtrack through Kullu.

With one car for the whole trip, the driver can also handle local outings from Jibhi, which is useful because taxis in the Banjar valley are fewer than in Kullu.

What the Banjar road is like

The road from Aut to Jibhi follows the Tirthan river at first, then climbs past Banjar on a narrow, winding two-lane road with few places to pass. It's well used by local buses and homestay guests, but slow. Our drivers know where the homestay turn-offs are, which matters because many aren't signposted from the road.

Leaving Jibhi: onward and return trips

From Jibhi, there's no need to return through Kullu unless you're staying there. For Chandigarh or Delhi, the route goes down to Aut and joins the highway south through Mandi. For Shimla, the road over Jalori Pass to Ani and on to Shimla is shorter on the map but slow and only open when there's no snow; most drivers prefer the highway in winter. For Manali, it's about 3½–4 hours back up the valley. Tell us your next stop and we'll price a one-way trip instead of a return to Kullu, which usually works out cheaper overall.
