Overview

Delhi airport to Kasol is roughly 510–530 km, usually 11 to 13 hours by taxi: out of the airport onto the NH44, north to Kiratpur, up the Kiratpur–Manali highway through Bilaspur, Mandi and the Aut tunnel to Bhuntar, then about 31 km up the Parvati valley to Kasol. Many travellers from abroad fly into Delhi and head straight for Kasol, the Parvati valley's riverside base for cafés, treks and hot springs, and a taxi from arrivals avoids a day in Delhi and an overnight bus with a change. We meet you at arrivals with a name board, track your flight, and drop you in Kasol, Chalal, Manikaran or Tosh.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1With a morning arrival, you'll reach Kasol by late evening; with an evening arrival, we suggest a night near the airport first.
  • 2After a long flight, an SUV or Innova gives more room to rest.
  • 3The last hour, from Bhuntar, is narrow and winding; we prefer to drive it in daylight.
  • 4In winter, fog around Delhi can delay flights and slow the first hours.
  • 5We track your flight; delays don't cost extra.

Meeting your driver at Delhi airport

Delhi's Terminal 3 handles most international flights. After customs, walk out to the arrivals area, where your driver waits with a name board at the meeting point outside the exit. You'll get the driver's name, photo and phone number on WhatsApp before you fly. If your flight is late, we track it; there's no extra charge for delays.

Straight to the mountains, or a night in Delhi?

If your flight lands before about 9 am, driving straight to Kasol is realistic: you'll arrive by evening. If you land later, or after an overnight long-haul flight, a night at an Aerocity hotel near the airport and an early start the next morning is much safer and more comfortable. We can book the pickup from your hotel instead of arrivals.

  • Morning arrival: drive straight up
  • Afternoon or night arrival: rest at Aerocity first
  • Driving the Parvati valley after dark isn't recommended

Where in Kasol we drop you

Kasol's main road runs along the Parvati river, and most guesthouses are close to it. Chalal is across the river by a footbridge, so the car stops on the Kasol side. Manikaran, about 4 km on, and Tosh, near Barshaini, are reachable by road; tell us your stay and the driver will go as close as the road allows.

Travelling from abroad

If you're arriving from abroad, a few things make the trip easier: an Indian SIM card or eSIM for WhatsApp calls with the driver, some cash in rupees for tea stops and tips, and a downloaded offline map. Drivers speak Hindi and basic English; for anything complicated, message us on WhatsApp and we'll translate.

The long road north

From the airport, the first two hours are the busiest: Delhi's ring roads and the NH44 through Sonipat and Panipat. Beyond Ambala, traffic eases, and at Kiratpur the road leaves the plains and climbs onto the four-lane through the Bilaspur hills. After Mandi comes the Pandoh gorge and the Aut tunnel, then the Kullu valley to Bhuntar, where you turn off into the Parvati valley for the final hour.

It's a long day, and the driver will plan proper breaks: breakfast at Murthal, lunch near Kiratpur or Bilaspur, and tea in Mandi. If you're jet-lagged, the back seat of an SUV or Innova is the best place to sleep through the plains.

Useful guides for this trip

The Himachal Backpacker Route: McLeod Ganj, Bir, Manali and Kasol

Most independent travellers in Himachal follow some version of the same loop: Tibetan McLeod Ganj, paragliding in Bir, the mountains around Manali, and the cafés and trails of Kasol in the Parvati valley. It's a natural circuit, because each place is a half-day or day's drive from the next. This guide sets out the usual order, drive times between each stop, and how to get around.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Permits Foreigners Need in Himachal: Kinnaur and Spiti

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. The exception is the border country of upper Kinnaur and Spiti, close to the Tibet frontier, where foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Indian citizens don't. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.

Rishikesh to McLeod Ganj, Manali, Kasol and Shimla: How to Get There

Rishikesh is where many travellers start in north India, and the Himachal hills, McLeod Ganj, Manali, Kasol and Shimla, are where most of them head next. The catch is that there are few direct connections: no railway into the Himachal hills from Rishikesh, and buses that usually mean a change and a night on the road. This guide compares the options for each destination, with realistic drive times.
