Where to Stay in Shimla: The Best Areas Compared

Where you stay in Shimla matters more than in most towns, because the centre is car-free and built on steep slopes. A hotel that looks close to the Mall on a map may be a long climb with luggage, while one on the Cart Road below is easy to reach but further from the views. This guide compares the main areas, who each suits and what to check before booking. We don't sell hotel rooms on their own, so it's a neutral guide to areas, not a list of properties. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Mall Road and the Ridge

Staying on or just off the Mall puts you in the heart of old Shimla, with the Ridge, Christ Church and the restaurants a short walk away. Because vehicles can't drive here, your taxi will stop at the lift or the nearest road point, and hotels arrange porters for luggage. It's ideal for a short stay focused on the town, less so with elderly relatives or lots of bags.

Cart Road and around the lift

Hotels along the Cart Road, below the Mall, are reachable by car and usually cheaper. The public lift connects the Cart Road with the Mall in a couple of minutes, so you get easy arrivals and easy access to the centre. Ask for a room away from the road if you're sensitive to traffic noise.

Chhota Shimla, Kasumpti and the upper slopes

These residential areas east of the centre are quieter, with mid-range hotels and homestays that cars can reach. They suit families with a car for the trip. Hotels on the slopes towards Jakhoo have the best views but steep approaches; keep food and bags away from the monkeys.

Outside Shimla: Kufri, Mashobra, Chail and Narkanda

Resorts in Kufri and Mashobra, 12 to 16 km away, offer forest, space and snow in winter, with Shimla a short drive away. Chail suits couples who want quiet and the palace grounds, and Narkanda is the place for apple orchards in autumn and snow and skiing in winter. All of these need a car; ours can stay with you for the trip.

What to check before booking

  • Car access: how close can a taxi get, and is there a porter service?
  • Steps: many Shimla hotels have long stairways; ask if you have mobility needs.
  • Heating and hot water in winter, and whether heaters cost extra.
  • Parking, if you're driving, as space is scarce and charged.
  • Peak-season rules: minimum stays and non-refundable rates around New Year and in June.

Shimla Itinerary: 1, 2, 3 and 4-Day Plans

How many days in Shimla is enough? Two to three full days suits most first visits: one for the old town on foot, one for Kufri and Mashobra, and one for Chail, Narkanda or the toy train. These plans assume you're already in Shimla; add the travel time from Delhi (7 to 9 hours) or Chandigarh (3 to 4 hours). Each one works with a private taxi for the out-of-town days.
