Mall Road and the Ridge, Shimla: What to See, Lift and Parking

The Mall and the Ridge are the heart of Shimla: a car-free promenade of colonial buildings, shops and cafés along the top of the town, opening onto a wide square with Christ Church at one end and views of the hills all round. Almost every visitor spends time here, and it's best seen slowly on foot. This guide covers what to see, how to get up from the road below, and where to park. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

What to see on the Ridge

  • Christ Church: the yellow neo-Gothic church that defines Shimla's skyline. Its foundation stone was laid in 1844. Visitors are welcome outside service times; dress modestly and keep quiet inside.
  • The open square: the town's living room, busy with families, photographers and pony rides, and the venue for festivals and winter events.
  • The views: north and east across forested ridges, and on clear days to the snow ranges.
  • The library and old municipal buildings in Tudor style along the square.

Walking the Mall

  • Scandal Point: where the Ridge meets the Mall, with the statue of Lala Lajpat Rai. The name comes from a popular local legend about a Patiala maharaja's elopement; the details are disputed.
  • Gaiety Theatre: a restored Victorian theatre from the 1880s, still used for plays and events, with guided visits at times.
  • The old General Post Office and the Town Hall, two of Shimla's best-known colonial buildings.
  • Shops and cafés: woollens, books, souvenirs, bakeries and long-established restaurants.
  • Lakkar Bazaar: just past the Ridge, a market of wooden crafts, toys and walking sticks.
  • The ice skating rink: below the Mall, an open-air natural rink that opens in a cold winter.

Vehicle rules: why you'll walk

The Ridge and the Mall are restricted roads under the Shimla Road Users and Pedestrians (Public Safety and Convenience) Act of 2007. Private and tourist vehicles aren't allowed, apart from emergency and specially permitted vehicles. Taxis drop visitors at the lift, near the Victory Tunnel, or at other road points below the Mall, and hotels on the Mall send porters for luggage.

The public lift

The public lift links the Cart Road, where buses and taxis run, with the Mall above, in two short stages. It saves a steep climb and is the main way most visitors reach the centre. There's a small ticket charge, and queues can be long on summer evenings and holidays; walking up the stepped lanes is the alternative.

Parking near Mall Road

Parking in central Shimla is scarce. Multi-level car parks near the lift and along the Cart Road are the main options, and fill early in peak season. If you've come with a driver, the simplest plan is to be dropped at the lift and call the car when you're ready; the driver will wait or park outside the centre.

Tips for visiting

  • Come early in the morning for quiet photos, or at dusk for the lights.
  • Wear good walking shoes: the lanes off the Mall are steep.
  • Watch for monkeys around food stalls.
  • Avoid the evening rush on summer weekends if you dislike crowds.
  • The walk up to Jakhoo temple starts near Christ Church.
