Why fly to Kangra for Dalhousie

Dalhousie is about 560 km from Delhi by road, ten to twelve hours of driving. Flying to Kangra takes about 1½ hours, and the transfer another 3½ to 4, so you arrive the same afternoon instead of the same night. Pathankot, with trains from Delhi, is the other common gateway; it's about 80 km below Dalhousie. For most short holidays, flying to Kangra and driving the last stretch is the fastest option.

  • Delhi to Dalhousie by road: about 10–12 hours
  • Fly to Kangra, then about 3½–4 hours by taxi
  • Train to Pathankot, then about 2½–3 hours by taxi

Dalhousie and Khajjiar

Dalhousie spreads across several pine- and deodar-covered hills, with colonial churches, Gandhi Chowk, Subhash Chowk and the Mall. Khajjiar, about 21–24 km away, is the meadow often called India's 'mini Switzerland', and Chamba's stone temples are further down the same road. With a day or two in Dalhousie, you can see all three; we can keep the car or book local trips separately.

Combining Dalhousie with McLeod Ganj

Kangra airport sits between Dharamshala and Dalhousie, so it suits a two-centre trip. Many travellers land at Gaggal, spend a few nights in McLeod Ganj, then drive about four hours to Dalhousie, and fly home from Kangra or take the train from Pathankot. That avoids retracing the same road and covers western Himachal's two best-known hill towns.

Meeting your driver

Gaggal is a small airport. Walk out of arrivals and look for your name board; you'll get the driver's name, photo and number on WhatsApp before you fly. If your flight is cancelled, which happens occasionally in poor weather, tell us and we'll help rearrange the transfer from Pathankot, Amritsar or Chandigarh instead.

If your flight is delayed

Morning flights into Kangra are sometimes delayed by fog or low cloud, especially in winter and the monsoon. If you land late, the drive to Dalhousie may end after dark, which we prefer to avoid on the final climb. In that case, we'll suggest a night in Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj, about 45 minutes from the airport, and an early start the next day. The driver tracks your flight and will discuss it with you on arrival.

Useful guides for this trip

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Permits Foreigners Need in Himachal: Kinnaur and Spiti

Most of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Kasol and Dalhousie, needs no special permit for foreign visitors beyond a valid Indian visa. The exception is the border country of upper Kinnaur and Spiti, close to the Tibet frontier, where foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Indian citizens don't. This guide explains where the permit applies, how travellers report getting it, and how to plan a Spiti road trip around it.

Hire a Car with a Private Driver in Himachal

Hiring a car with a driver is the easiest way to see Himachal. You don't deal with hairpin bends, snow chains or mountain parking, and you stop wherever you like. Whether you need one transfer, a sightseeing day or ten days across the state, here's how our private driver service works and what it costs.
