Devbhoomi: the land of the gods
Himachal calls itself Devbhoomi, the land of the gods, because nearly every village has its own deity and temple. This tour covers the famous pilgrimage shrines as well as old temples of local deities in the Kullu valley, which are carried in processions at festivals like Kullu Dussehra.
Bijli Mahadev
The Bijli Mahadev temple stands on a ridge at about 2,450 m above the meeting of the Beas and Parvati rivers. According to local belief, lightning strikes the temple's lingam regularly, shattering it, and priests restore it with butter. The views over the Kullu valley from the ridge are superb.
Who this suits
Families, pilgrim groups and anyone curious about Himachal's living temple traditions will enjoy this week. It combines faith with mountain views, ending in Manali for a little holiday at the end.
Planning around festivals
If you'd like to see a temple festival, time the trip for Navratri at the goddess temples, Shivratri at Mandi in February or March, or Kullu Dussehra in October, when the valley's deities gather in Kullu. Festivals are spectacular but crowded, so book early.
