Overview

Chandigarh to Kufri is roughly 125–135 km, usually 3½ to 4½ hours by taxi: up the NH5 through Parwanoo and Solan to Shimla, then about 16 km along the old Hindustan–Tibet road through Dhalli to Kufri at about 2,650 m. Kufri sits higher than Shimla, so it gets snow more reliably in winter, and it's where most Tricity families head for their first sight of snow in December and January. The rest of the year, it's a busy resort with horse rides, Mahasu Peak, the Himalayan Nature Park and fun parks. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, or at the airport or station.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Leave Chandigarh by 7 am on winter weekends: snow days bring heavy traffic from Shimla to Kufri.
  • 2The driver uses the Shimla bypass and goes straight to Dhalli, avoiding the town centre.
  • 3After fresh snow, the road beyond Dhalli may close until it's cleared; we check before setting out.
  • 4Snow clothing and boots can be hired at Kufri; agree prices first.
  • 5Add Shimla's Mall Road, Chail or Narkanda for a longer day or an overnight.

Seeing snow from Chandigarh

Kufri is the nearest reliable snow to the Tricity in most winters. Snow usually arrives from late December, and the days after a fresh fall are the busiest: traffic backs up from Dhalli, parking fills, and the last few kilometres can take an hour. Leaving Chandigarh early and going on a weekday helps. If Kufri has little snow, Narkanda, about 45 km further, is higher and usually has more.

Things to do in Kufri

Most visitors ride horses or mules up to Mahasu Peak for the views, visit the Himalayan Nature Park, and spend time at the fun parks. In winter, there's snow play and, in good years, beginner skiing on the slopes. Activity prices vary, so agree them before you start.

Kufri as a day trip or with Shimla

A day trip from Chandigarh is long but common in winter: about seven to nine hours of driving round trip, leaving three hours or so at Kufri. Staying a night in Shimla is easier: Kufri is only 40 minutes to an hour from town, and you can see the Mall Road and the Ridge in the evening. With one car for the whole trip, the driver stays with you.

Winter driving and vehicles

In snow, the road beyond Dhalli can be icy, and police sometimes allow only vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. An SUV is the better choice for winter trips, and our drivers carry chains in season. If the road is closed, we'll take you as far as is safe and suggest alternatives such as the Shimla Ridge or a later start.

A winter day trip that works

For a single day from the Tricity, timing is everything. Leave at 6–7 am to reach Kufri by 10–11 am, before the crowds and before the road from Dhalli fills up. Spend three hours in the snow, have lunch in Kufri or Shimla, and head back by 2 pm so the hill section is behind you before dark. Pack snacks and water, a change of socks and gloves, and expect the return to take longer than the drive up on busy days.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Adding the Himalayas to a Golden Triangle Trip

The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is India's classic first trip, and the Himalayan foothills of Himachal are the perfect contrast to it: cool air, pine forest and mountain towns after the heat and crowds of the plains. The question is how to connect them without wasting days. Here's how the pieces fit, with honest drive times.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

When Does It Snow in Manali and Shimla? A Month-by-Month Guide

Seeing snow is one of the main reasons people visit Himachal in winter, and the first question is always when. The honest answer is that snowfall varies a lot from year to year. Broadly, late December to February is the core snow season in both Manali and Shimla, with early March still possible. Here's what to expect month by month, where to go if the towns themselves are bare, and how winter affects your taxi plans.
