Overview

Chandigarh to Mandi is roughly 185–200 km, usually 4½ to 5½ hours by taxi on the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane, which has cut the old hill road's bends and tunnels through the ridges above Bilaspur. Mandi, at about 760 m on the Beas, is an old princely temple town, sometimes called the 'Varanasi of the hills' for its many stone shrines, and the gateway to Rewalsar and Prashar lakes and the Kullu valley. Most people come to Mandi for the temples and the International Shivratri fair, for IIT Mandi at Kamand, or to break the drive to Manali. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula and drop you at your Mandi hotel, campus or relative's house.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1The four-lane from Kiratpur to Nerchowk makes this one of the faster hill drives in Himachal; most of it is wide and smooth.
  • 2Leave Chandigarh by 8–9 am to reach Mandi by early afternoon with a lunch stop.
  • 3For IIT Mandi's Kamand campus, add about 45 minutes to an hour beyond Mandi town on the Kataula road.
  • 4During the Shivratri fair week, Mandi's centre is crowded and some streets close; we plan the drop around it.
  • 5In the monsoon, slides on the older stretches near Mandi can slow traffic; allow extra time in July–August.

Things to do in Mandi

Mandi's old town is built along the Beas and Suketi rivers, with stone temples scattered through it. Bhutnath temple sits in the centre of the bazaar and is the focus of the Shivratri fair. Panchvaktra temple, with a five-faced Shiva image, stands at the confluence about a kilometre away, and Tarna Devi temple looks down on the town from a hill. The Seri Manch, the old open-air stage, is the heart of the market.

Further out, Rewalsar lake, about 25 km away, is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs, with monasteries, a gurudwara and temples around its shore. Prashar lake, about 45–50 km away at roughly 2,730 m, has a pagoda-style temple beside a small lake on a high meadow.

  • Bhutnath and Panchvaktra temples
  • Tarna Devi temple
  • Rewalsar lake (about 25 km)
  • Prashar lake (about 45–50 km)

International Shivratri fair

Mandi's biggest week is the International Shivratri fair, held around Maha Shivratri in February or March. Deities are carried in from villages across the district to pay respects at Bhutnath temple, and processions, folk music and markets fill the town. Hotels fill early, and traffic in the centre is heavy, so book well in advance and share your hotel with us so the driver can plan the closest practical drop.

Mandi as a stop on the way to Manali

Many travellers heading for Kullu and Manali break the trip in Mandi rather than doing the whole drive in one day. A night in Mandi turns a seven- to nine-hour trip into two easy halves, with a visit to Rewalsar or the old town in between. The next morning, Manali is about 3–3½ hours further, through the Pandoh dam area, the Aut tunnel and Kullu.

Visiting IIT Mandi

IIT Mandi's main campus is at Kamand, in the Uhl valley north of Mandi town. Parents dropping off students usually come with plenty of luggage, so an SUV or Innova Crysta is the better choice. The drive from Mandi town to Kamand is on a narrower hill road; we include it in the trip if you tell us the destination is the campus.

Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh: A Month-by-Month Guide

Himachal changes completely with the seasons, and the right month depends on what you want: clear mountain views, snow, green valleys or festivals. For most international visitors, the best windows are March to June and September to November, when roads are reliable and the weather is pleasant. Here's what each part of the year is really like on the road, and how it affects a trip with a driver.

Bir Billing Paragliding Trip Guide: Season, Getting There and Planning

Bir Billing in the Kangra valley is India's best-known paragliding site. Pilots launch from Billing, a grassy ridge at about 2,400 m, and land in fields at Bir, roughly 1,100 m lower. Most visitors come for a tandem flight with a registered pilot, then stay on for the monasteries, cafés and walks. This guide covers when you can fly, how to plan around the weather, and the quickest ways to reach Bir by road or air.

Himachal Itinerary for First-Time Visitors: 7, 10 and 14 Days

The most common mistake on a first Himachal trip is trying to see too much. Hill roads are slow: 250 km can take a full day. These itineraries are built around realistic drive times, with no day longer than about nine hours and rest days between long drives. Each one can be booked with a single car and driver for the whole trip.

Staying Safe in Himachal: A Practical Guide for International Visitors

Himachal Pradesh is one of India's most visited and generally welcoming regions, and most visitors have a trouble-free trip. The real risks here are less about crime and more about the mountains themselves: hill roads, altitude, weather and long days. This guide covers what we tell our own guests before they travel.
