Overview
Chandigarh to Sangla is roughly 330–345 km, usually 10 to 11½ hours by taxi: up the NH5 through Solan to Shimla, over Narkanda, along the Sutlej gorge through Rampur to Karcham, then up the narrow Baspa valley road to Sangla at about 2,700 m. It's one of the longest single-day drives in Himachal, and the Karcham–Sangla stretch should be driven in daylight, so most travellers either leave Chandigarh before dawn or stop a night in Shimla, Narkanda or Sarahan. We pick you up anywhere in Chandigarh, Mohali or Panchkula, or at the airport or station, and drop you at your Sangla stay.

Driving tips for this route
- 1For a single day, leave Chandigarh by 5 am so the Karcham–Sangla road is driven in daylight.
- 2A night in Narkanda or Sarahan on the way makes the trip far easier.
- 3Use the Shimla bypass; the driver avoids the town centre.
- 4Monsoon landslides on the Sutlej highway can hold traffic; leave a day's buffer before any flight home.
- 5No permit is needed for Sangla or Chitkul.

Planning a two-day drive
Ten to eleven hours is a lot for one day, especially with the final hour on a narrow cliff road. Two splits work well. The first is a night in Narkanda, about five hours from Chandigarh, followed by a five- to six-hour second day. The second is a night in Sarahan, about seven hours from Chandigarh, with its Bhimakali temple, followed by a short three-hour run to Sangla the next morning.
With the same car for both days, the driver stays with you overnight; you pay for the extra day, not two separate trips.
Flying in to Chandigarh for Kinnaur
Chandigarh is the nearest major airport to Kinnaur, with flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities. If your flight lands in the afternoon, stay the night in Chandigarh or drive to Shimla, about three hours, and set out for Sangla the next morning. Arriving at Sangla after dark isn't recommended.
- Chandigarh to Shimla: about 3 hours
- Shimla to Sangla: about 7–8 hours
- Sangla to Chitkul: about an hour
Things to do in Sangla
Sangla is the base for the Baspa valley. Kamru's tower fort, about 2 km above town, and the wooden village of Batseri are easy outings. Rakchham and Chitkul, further up the valley, make a half-day trip, and the riverside is good for walks and trout fishing in summer. In autumn, the orchards are heavy with apples and the skies are at their clearest.
Continuing from Sangla
From Sangla, most travellers go up to Chitkul for a night, then to Kalpa for the Kinner Kailash view, and either return to Chandigarh or continue to Spiti. Keeping one car for the whole trip saves arranging local taxis in Kinnaur, where they're fewer and more expensive.
Sarahan: the best place to break the drive
Sarahan sits about 17 km above the highway at Jeori, on a shelf facing the Srikhand range. Its Bhimakali temple, the old family temple of the Bashahr rulers, is built in the Kinnauri style of stacked stone and deodar beams, with carved silver doors and a sloping slate roof. HPTDC and private hotels nearby make it an easy overnight, about seven hours from Chandigarh.
Staying here turns the drive to Sangla into two comfortable days: a long first day with a beautiful evening at the temple, then a short morning along the Sutlej to Karcham and up the Baspa valley. It's also a gentler way to gain altitude than going straight from the plains to Sangla.
- Bhimakali temple
- Views of the Srikhand range
- About 3 hours on to Sangla
