Shimla Honeymoon Guide: Romantic Places, Season and a 4-Day Plan

Shimla has drawn honeymooners for generations: colonial charm, evening walks on the Ridge, cedar forests, a toy train through the hills, and snow nearby in winter. It's also close to Delhi and Chandigarh, which suits a short trip. This guide covers the best places for couples, when to go, a relaxed four-day plan and how to combine Shimla with Manali or Chail. It's part of our Shimla travel guide.

Romantic places in and around Shimla

  • The Ridge and Mall Road at dusk, when the lights come on across the hills.
  • Christ Church and the quiet lanes behind the Ridge.
  • Jakhoo hill: an early walk or ropeway ride for the views.
  • The Kalka–Shimla toy train: a slow ride through tunnels and forest.
  • Kufri and Narkanda: snow together in winter.
  • Mashobra and Naldehra: forest walks and the old golf course meadows.
  • Chail: a palace in the pines and far fewer people.
  • Summer Hill and the Glen: shady, quiet walks a short ride from town.

Best time for a Shimla honeymoon

For snow, aim for January to mid-February. Shimla town doesn't get snow every year, but Kufri and Narkanda usually do. Christmas and New Year are busy and expensive.

For pleasant weather, March to June and October to November are ideal, with mild days and cool evenings. October and November have the clearest views. July and August are wet and misty, romantic in their way but with road disruption.

A relaxed 4-day honeymoon plan

With a week, add three nights in Manali, about 245 km away, or two in Chail and Kasauli. Our honeymoon packages follow these routes with hotels and a car.

  • Day 1: arrive, settle in, and walk the Mall and the Ridge in the evening.
  • Day 2: Jakhoo temple in the morning, Christ Church and Lakkar Bazaar, then a slow afternoon. Dinner with a view.
  • Day 3: Kufri and Mashobra by car, with snow in winter or forest walks in summer.
  • Day 4: the Viceregal Lodge in the morning, then leave via Chail or ride the toy train down to Kalka.

Where couples like to stay

Heritage hotels near the Mall and on Chaura Maidan suit couples who want old-world atmosphere and walks into town. For quiet and views, look at resorts in Mashobra, Kufri or Chail. In winter, check the room heating and hot water, and whether a car can reach the door. Our where-to-stay guide compares the areas.

Tips for couples

  • Book early for winter and the May–June season.
  • A car for the whole trip makes day trips and hotel transfers easy, since the centre is car-free.
  • Ask hotels directly about honeymoon arrangements such as room decoration or a candlelit dinner.
  • Pack warm layers even in summer for the evenings.
  • Keep your plans light: Shimla is best enjoyed slowly.
