Two valleys, two moods
Manali is busy, with snow points, adventure sports and a lively Mall Road. Kasol is slow: forest paths, the river, and cafés serving Israeli and Himachali food. Ending in Kasol gives the trip a calm last evening before the long drive home.
The route also avoids doubling back: Kasol sits just off the main road you'd take out of the Kullu valley anyway.
About Manikaran
Manikaran is a pilgrimage town for both Sikhs and Hindus, with hot springs that bubble up beside the Parvati river. The gurdwara's kitchen cooks rice and lentils in the hot water, and the langar serves thousands of visitors a day.
Shortening or stretching it
To save driving, take the overnight train or a flight to Chandigarh and start the package there; it removes about 500 km of driving. To add depth, stay a second night in Kasol and walk up to Tosh or Chalal.
Groups of friends often prefer the comfort tier in Manali and simpler riverside cottages in Kasol; we can mix tiers by place.

- No permits are needed. The Kasol area has a reputation for drugs; possession is illegal and penalties in India are severe.
- Manikaran's gurdwara expects heads covered and shoes removed; the langar is free for everyone.
- Mobile signal in Kasol is patchy on some networks.
When to go
- • March to June and September to November are best for both Manali and Kasol.
- • In December and January, Manali gets snow nearby but Kasol is cold and some cafés close.
- • July and August bring heavy rain and landslide risk in the Parvati valley; we don't recommend those months.
