Overview

A focused long weekend in Manali, with three nights in one hotel so you unpack only once. The drive up from Chandigarh takes seven to nine hours through the Bilaspur hills, Mandi and the Kullu valley. Once there, you have two full days: one in and around town for Hadimba temple, Vashisht and Old Manali, and one up the Solang valley and through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul. It's the shortest trip we'd recommend from Chandigarh, and it works in any season.

Best for: Couples and friends with a long weekend who want Manali without the Shimla detour

  • Three nights in one Manali hotel
  • Hadimba temple, Vashisht and Old Manali
  • Solang valley's ropeway and snow slopes
  • The Atal Tunnel and Sissu waterfall
  • Kullu valley drive along the Beas
  • Breakfast and dinner every day

Why base yourself in one hotel

Moving hotels every night costs time. On this trip you check in once and use Manali as the base for everything, which suits a short break. Day trips to Solang and Sissu are each under two hours each way.

Standard hotels are near Mall Road or along the river; comfort hotels are typically up the hill in quieter areas with balconies facing the Solang valley peaks.

Making the most of two days

Do Solang and Sissu on the day with the best forecast, and keep the town sights for the other. In peak season, an early start matters more than anything else on the Solang road.

What to pack and what to expect

Even in May and June, Manali evenings drop to about 10°C, and Solang and Sissu are colder still, so bring a fleece and a light down jacket. In winter you'll need thermals, gloves and waterproof shoes; heavy snow suits and boots can be hired at Solang.

Expect crowds at Solang and the tunnel's south portal on weekends and holidays; weekdays are noticeably calmer. Ropeway and activity prices are set by local operators and vary with demand, so agree the price before you pay. Your driver knows which counters are reliable and will advise, but bookings and payments for activities are made directly with the operators.

Adding a day

Four days is tight. A fifth day can go to Naggar and the Kullu valley shawl weavers, to Rohtang Pass when permits are available, or to the Parvati valley for Manikaran and Kasol on the way down.

If you're coming from Delhi, we can pick you up there instead; it adds about 250 km each way and a longer first and last day.

Route and price at a glance

The Manali Short Break trip covers about 725 km by road over 4 days, with overnight stops in Manali. The car is priced on the same basis as our private car tours: 1,000 billable km (the larger of the real distance and 250 km a day) at the vehicle's per-km rate, plus 3 nights of driver allowance, with fuel, tolls and parking included.

For two travellers on standard hotels, that comes to ₹10,500 for 3 hotel nights with breakfast and dinner, ₹24,200 for the car and driver and a ₹5,205 service fee: ₹39,905 in all, or ₹20,000 each. Larger groups share the car and pay less per person.
