Overview

Chandigarh to Leh is about 735 km via Manali, usually three days by taxi with 20 to 23 hours of driving: Chandigarh to Manali on day one, Manali to Jispa or Keylong on day two, and over the high passes of the Manali–Leh highway to Leh, at about 3,500 m, on day three. The highway is usually open from about late May to mid-November. It's a journey rather than a transfer, through Kullu, Lahaul and the high plains of Ladakh, and the gradual climb helps with the altitude compared with flying straight into Leh. We pick you up anywhere in the Tricity and drive you all the way with one driver.

Driving tips for this route

  • 1Day 1: Chandigarh to Manali, about 7–9 hours. Day 2: Manali to Jispa or Keylong. Day 3: Jispa to Leh.
  • 2Adding a rest day in Manali before the high passes is strongly recommended.
  • 3Start day 3 before 5 am; the high section is slower in the afternoon.
  • 4Outside taxis can drop in Leh but can't do local sightseeing in Ladakh; book a Leh taxi for Nubra and Pangong.
  • 5Fly back from Leh, or book the return drive before the highway closes in autumn.

Three days to Leh

The first day is the familiar Kiratpur–Manali highway through Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu. Day two crosses into Lahaul through the Atal Tunnel to Keylong or Jispa, a short day that helps you adjust. Day three is the big one: over Baralacha La, across the Sarchu plains, up the Gata loops, over Nakee La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La, and down to Leh. It's long and remote, with few services after Keylong.

A rest day in Manali before day two, especially for families and older travellers, makes the high section much easier on the body.

  • Day 2: Manali to Jispa or Keylong
  • Day 3: Jispa to Leh

Taxi rules in Ladakh

Taxi associations in Ladakh allow taxis from outside Ladakh to drop passengers in Leh and pick them up for the return, but local sightseeing, such as Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri, has to be done in Leh-registered taxis. Travel guides report this is enforced locally, so plan your time in Ladakh with a Leh taxi, and book us for the drive in and out.

Altitude and health

Leh is at about 3,500 m, and Ladakh's tourism department advises at least 48 hours of rest on arrival before any sightseeing. Arriving by road helps a little because you climb over two days, but the passes on the way are higher than Leh itself, so altitude sickness is still common. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and tell the driver at once if anyone has a bad headache, breathlessness or confusion; descending is the cure.

Getting back

Most travellers fly out of Leh, which has direct flights to Delhi and other cities. If you'd like to drive back, the same Manali–Leh route works in reverse, or you can return via Srinagar on a different road. Our taxi can pick you up in Leh for the return to Manali or Chandigarh; book it before the season ends, as the highway closes with the first heavy snow in autumn.
